Transmisson went out in 92 Eldorado. At shop now to have a used one installed. Shop says not shifting and its an electrial problem. It's a nice car but don't want to spend thousands to get it fixed. Is there someway to find the problem? Need help with this one.

Mechanic says it drives but must shift manually from 3rd/2nd/1st. Says it's something in the electricial. He took it to transmission shop and they won't touch it because they say all the wires are a mess. I am a women with some knowledge.
Is there a way to fix this? I have a choice to pay for the work that has been done ($800)and have a car that doesn't shift or leave the car there and junk it. I really like the car.
Please come up with something.

That's unbelievable. What they told you before starting a job? They suppose to tell labor job and a warranty. Labor cost should be around $800 (labor only) for complete rebuild ($2K total). Did they changed solenoids? Transaxle pressure switch? It's very easy to change them. What they did? If it's a pressure solenoid it needs taking transmission off I guess (complete rebuild).

They told me $775 including labor for used transmission. They say the problem is in the wiring under the dash. It's a mess with some raw wires touching others. I asked about the solenoids and he said that wasn't it. It's all in the wiring. Being a women I feel there should be a way to run a wiring from one end to another but I guess that can't be done. He still has the car going on 2 weeks. Lossing hope and this point and now looking for another car I guess.

Transmission won't shift automatically but will manual?
If engine is 4.9L with 4T60E transmission, I would suspect a blown fuse in the engine compartment driver side front black Fuse/Relay box. Have them look for the one labeled ECM or VCC. The label is inside the black box cover.

If it's just a wire under the dash, how it can cost $775? If it's not a transmission after all why they charge transmission labor? You shouldn't pay for they misdiagnosys. I suspect they just like your car and want to have it.

So the wires that are a mess under the dash might be the problem? I would have thought they would have checked the fuses. I will call them about the fuses. Can you think of anything else I should tell him?

Unless the techicians are Cadillac trained, I suspect no, they did not check the fuses. They only suspect the problem is electrical and not mechanical. If the wires under the dash are in such a "mess" then that is likely the cause for blowing the fuse. Electrical tape and or shrink wrap will fix the wires.
