Only 22k miles, but it's also almost 20 years.

I plan to drain whatever will drain, remove the pan, clean mating surfaces, replace the filter and gasket, install the pan, and refill. While there, can you suggest other things I might do/replace/fix/adjust/check?

Anything special about the tranny fluid, or do I just buy vanilla?

Thanks!

Get a neoprene gasket, not the cork. Torque the bolts to the correct value.
A good brand of trans fluid is fine. I added a bottle of LubeGuard (red bottle) when I did my change.

Sounds like a good plan. It's been a couple years since I did mine but I seem to remember that I almost got caught on a rookie mistake when I did mine. The O-ring from the old filter stayed stuck in place and the new filter didn't seat right. Luckily I caught it before going any further. I use plain vanilla ATF now; I don't believe there is any difference in it.
