My '84 Seville's speedometer goes into blinking "85" at speeds in excess, due to regulations in effect in the late seventies that mandated that speedometers should not read past 85 MPH.

I find it extremely annoying and want to override the function to get the accurate reading. Is the function within the cluster itself or the BCM or the ECM?

Anyone know how to "fix" this?

....and pleae don't tell me to drive slower. :D

I sincerely doubt there's much chance you can reprogram the computer that controls that function. I mean there's hardly any aftermarket support for the 93+ Northstars, how much could there be for your 84?

There is plenty chance of re-programming if the "blinking 85" command resides in the computer. More tricky would be if the display itself is "wired" to do this if the speed readings are exceeded.

As the dash is already setup to readout in metric where the "85" equivalent is errr...ummm... 136 KPH? the only question really is where is the override of readout command is located.

I remember "back in the day" one of the car magazines took a Lincoln Mark VII to Germany to drive on the Autobahn and they mentioned getting the 85MPH readout limiter changed/removed for the trip.
