Hey, I am new to the Caddy world and to be honest I have like them for all my life really. so finally get one and not doing my research I got this one... has only 94000 original miles... all the bells and whistles but
it is having one problem. Power on the takeoff. When I press the gas it goes nowhere fast and then gradually catches back up. I have had my mechanic tune it up when I first got it and after I thought it was the tranny.. took it to Aamco and was not the Tranny.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what it could be?
I am thinking of engine swapping. What would be the best fit with a good amount of power?

I had a similar problem, it was the o2 sensor.

A popular swap is the LT1 and 500. I'd go with the LT1, plenty of power, and not that hard of a swap from what ive heard.
Yeah, the 4100 was a slug on an engine, so any little problem can cause noticeable lag. I can't suggest anything that wouldn't have been found during the course of a regular tune-up, so...

You know, the Olds 307 isn't a bad engine. Very reliable. rated at around 140 horses, it's a little more hardy than the 4100, but it's tuned for torque, so really, I can't complain about the engine. There's power in that engine, and acceleration isn't nearly as bad as people make it seem.

But if you're going shopping and can pick any engine, 500s are always fun, especially if you tune them for serious power.
hey, thanks for the responses and i will definitely have the o2 sensor checked TOMORROW. but hey 500's. 500 what's? I love cars but I ain't a know all so if yo could explain what you mean cuz I can kinda go crazy if I want to....

The 500 cubic inch engine from the mid '70's Cadillacs. Its a huge engine with tons of power. Its a fairly popular swap. The 472 is also a popular swap. But i would go with the 350 cubic inch LT1, someone else can explain it better than me...
Stay away from the early model Northstars. (93 to 99).

Overheating, head bolts stripping, starter under intake manifold.

Other than that, they are good cars. 2000 and up are good cars too.

Good luck.
Well I did have that problem checked and it was the timing... it needed to be adjusted a bit... worked well but not enough power so I am putting a 350 olds motor in as you read this... will post pics when finished....
350 Olds is a tried and true swap for these cars. Good choice if the job is done right. A later '90-'96 Chevylac 350 would be better but you really need an entire car to pull this off properly. Cutting corners with carburetors and old fashoned crap is OK for hot rodding but it will clean out your bank account if the car is used for real life events. Fuel injection and overdrive will allow your 4,000 lb car to get close to 20 mpg on the highway.
Have fun.
