Hi Guys and Gals,
I have a 76 Eldorado Convertible with a bad Cat Converter. I'm have an exhaust leak in it and I need to replace it. Any ideas?
In the past I've replaced a Cat on my 77 Sedan DeVille with a straight pipe but that made the exhaust system a little noisy. Should I put an after market Cat back or a straight pipe with a bigger muffler or....?:hmm:
Thanks

Just took a quick look online, doesn't seem like there's an aftermarket cat for your car. That's kind of strange. Usually for most old cars stores like NAPA will have a generic cat with the correct ends for your application for $150. It's just a little honeycomb cat that works better than the old pellet type.

Guess they don't have one big enough for the 500 :) I would do like Ranger said and just replace it with a little resonator and be done with it, if you will be able to pass emissions inspections.

Eldorado looks awsome. If you don't need the cat where you are just remove it. If you need it because of emissions testing hit up some good parts stores and they should be able to find you an aftermarket one to use.

Didn't GM put the goofy ERG tube about 3/4" in dia. that ran up from the cat to the engine on that gigantic 40 lbs. converter in that era. I remenber the tube would break at the weld & is possible that tube could be repaired replaced. If not that it still may be repairable. They had the double wall "aluminized" pipes that would burnout the steel rendering them weak.

I don't know how willing you are to going after market but there is a lot of choices that would improve performance & MPG while lowering noise & reducing weight.

The car is outstanding and any changes should with discretion remain OEM.
