Someone dropped a 472 engine on me. I just got around to getting it
out from under the covers. The air cleaner is in really good
condition. The gold inscription on the intake snorkle was still
readable. The cover, however was starting to rust. It was painted
gold, but I'm not sure if that was the original color.
I started cleaning it using my electrolysis process, as I wanted to
keep the metal close to original. The rust and the gold paint lifted
and left a primer still on most of the top of the cover.
On the underside of the cover was an incription that could now be
read. AC filter # and other info.
My question is were the outside of these covers gold or black?

The original aircleaner on my 1968 472 is black with gold letters on it.
Though I have read about people having gold-colored 472 aircleaners
for sale...there were maybe 2 different kinds to choose from back then ?

Kind regards from Stockholm, Sweden.

I don't think fuel injection was an option back then. TBI's didn't show up until 1977.

The gold ones usually indicated a fuel injected motor, while the black ones were the far more common carbureted engines.

My 68 has a black cleaner and snorkel with gold 472 decal. The lid is gold. I think they all were in 68. Check some photos on ebay cars for sale.

The air cleaner HOUSING is gloss black, but the COVER is gold / bronze colored. It's all over the original 1968 brochures. Cadillac was proud of their new engine. I suspect that it remained gold through 1970 but can't be sure.

Mine is now Cadillac dark blue glossy because i forgot to tell the engine guys to paint it gold!
