1988 Sedan Deville 4.5L

I was wondering if there is a solution to fix this problem:

I now need to go heavy on the gas in 1st and 2nd gear so that when the car switches to 3rd gear it has enough speed to compensate for a weak 3rd gear.

Why is the car gutless in 3rd gear. It feels like it does engage but there is no power or torque.

Any suggestions will help greatly.

Thank you.

Sounds like the transmission has worn internal components that prevent third gear from transferring much power without slipping. Band-Aids like flushes and Mechanic In A Bottle at the grocery work about 0.01% of the time but you're welcome to try them if you have time and money to burn. What's needed is a professional transmission technician to overhaul or rebuild the unit. Your other option is to replace it with a factory reman unit or with a salvage unit. If you go salvage you're taking a good risk that it won't work at it's age and your labor, fluids, and any parts you change like filters will be wasted.
