I've never run out of oil. I've lost about 1/2 a qt between changes, which is 5k miles for me, no matter what the DIC says. I've never had my life get below 50%.

We have another that ran out.
A perusal of the FSM shows an oil level sensor in the 3.6L motor. You'd have to be deaf, dumb, and blind to run out of oil without noticing the lights and messages. If it was leaking it would leave a puddle everywhere you parked. If it burned it, it would be smoking like a mosquito fogger. If the level sensors aren't effective it might be time to drain the oil from a guinea pig, turn the key on, and see what you see.

First thing. The low oil message will only come on if the Engine is shut off.
Next The engine is built soooo well that without any oil the oil pump will build air pressure and keep the light off. I have a tech on record in Seattle that said he showed a GM AVM (Area Vehcile Manager) that they make 10psi no oil. He broke the seal on the oil filter canister and it dropped.
Next it holds 6 quarts. GM allows for 1 quart per 1000 miles. That is 5 quarts in 5000 miles.
next it seem that some Vehicles never go to 0% after 15k miles. Yes 15k miles and they still read 16%. If it took 15K to run out no problem.
This engine will set DTC's way before you run out. You will Get cam phaser codes and misfire codes. This will occure if under 2 quarts remain.

This engine has oil jet spraying the cylinder walls and pistons to keep them lubed.
This would be less damage to the engine.
All the oil is consumed! No leaks!
It looks like you have arguments both ways; reasons why it could run out unnoticed and reasons why it would be obvious. What happened to checking the oil when you refuel? There is a thread on the CTS forum where an owner complains about the "low oil level" message but the dipstick says the engine is full. The ceiling on the OLM has been raised a couple of times. maybe they went too far this time. It's time to fall back to Model T days and check the oil regularly. As far as I'm concerned it's owner abuse when the engine oil runs out. My opinion doesn't count. It's what the manufacturer says that hits your pocketbook.
A lady at work went to the dealer for a "Women's Car Maint" seminar. Instructor told all how imp it is to change oil regularly. Lady stands up and says "I have not changed my oil in 59,000 miles, and it runs fine." Instructor told her: "Be here at 8 tomorrow morning; you get a free oil change."

I ran a lawn mower over thirty years without changing the oil in it and I finally retired it when the wheels fell off. I've seen many cars that at least look like they have never changed the oil. I knew another guy that ran his on old crankcase drainings. I strongly suspect that there are some pretty large margins in this area.
i bought a tsv hotchkis kit off of newton this weekend. he was telling me how he had his 3.6 replaced for burning oil. ring werent seating right or something like that hit him up. caddy replaced it for him
This is a very interesting thread. I too have had missing oil issues. The one and only time I ran the car using the OLM my car went 13000 kms before hitting the magical 10%. I check my oil weekly and during that 13000 kms I added exactly 2 litres of oil to maintain the crankcase level at full. In my opinion that constitutes an oil consumption issue......my dealer says this is within normal operating range for the engine. I have never owned a car that used oil between change and I've owned alot of new cars. In any case I have decided I will pay for my own maintenence rather then have cadillac do it as they do here in Canada and i will do it myself every 5000 kms.....just like my father taught me to.
