had this same issue in our new xt4.. the screen would black out connected to the usb running carplay.... so wife started using the bluetooth... seems like after the last apple update, we havent had any issues using carplay now... the screen stays up running waze, and i'm able to play music off my phone as well while connected.. but that car sat at the dealer for a week for that issue and they could not reproduce it.. go figure~.. but fingers crossed, it seems to be working now.
