I am right dead in the middle of replacing the front shocks. This is my third time down this road having done this previously on our 2007 Escalade and our 2009. Seems these shocks are bound to fail at 50K to 75K regularly. Here is my dilemma. I wanted to remain OEM with AC Delco BWI simply to avoid any interop hassle and the wife is fine with how the truck drives/feels when the shocks are new and or working properly. Currently however the fronts are completely blown out......all fluid has leaked out on both sides and there is literally ZERO dampening. We are bouncing around on the springs like a straight hooptie. It is awful.
So, I ordered a full set front and rear AC Delco from a provider on eBay
Genuine Pair Shock Absorber Front+Rear For 15-20 Escalade Suburban Tahoe Yukon | eBay
who seemed to have a good track record and legit operation although I am now second guessing this move. Keep following me here: I installed the rears and had no issues whatsoever. The rears were blown out too and really needed replacement. Now onto the fronts. I should also point out that about 2 years ago I installed the Maxx Suspensions leveling kit on the front end and it worked as advertised. Pretty much brought the front end to a level with the rear and eliminated the awful rake these trucks have from the factory. Here's where the trouble begins:
After unboxing the new coil and shock combo for the front, I was convinced these were in fact genuine OEM AC Delco BWI Magna-ride units. So I remove the original front right unit along with the Maxx Suspension spacers with no issue. I load the spacers onto the new unit and start trying to feed the assembly back into the tower. They will not go in. They seem to be clanging into the back side of tower not allowing the top mounting bolts to slide thru the 3 holes. I fiddle, I fight, I cuss, I wrangle and this sumbitch will not go in. What I notice during the process is the bottom of the strut/shock is hitting the lower control arm and wont allow for enough room to change the angle. I'm like there's
something wrong here. I take the new unit and lay it next to the one I pulled out and the new one is a full 2 inches longer........and, it may be an optical illusion but I swear the top plate of the assembly seems to be angled differently as well.
See attached pics.
Now there is only 2 possibilities here I believe but want some smarter more experienced people than me to weigh in. These new springs are either 2 inches longer now to eliminate the rake we all dislike, or my spring have collapsed and are now 2 inches shorter which I cannot believe. These springs are so dense and hefty I cannot see that being the case. I m baffled and have re-installed the old blown out units back on the truck while I try to figure this out. We had to drive from Dallas to New Orleans on this ratchet-ass shocks pulling a trailer to pick up my daughter who is graduating from Loyola law school. We had not choice and it was a 100% beat down of a ride. I am writing this from my hotel room and wanna solved this when we get back home. Smart people chime in.
