2018 ESV dreaded front shocks/springs swap

I am right dead in the middle of replacing the front shocks. This is my third time down this road having done this previously on our 2007 Escalade and our 2009. Seems these shocks are bound to fail at 50K to 75K regularly. Here is my dilemma. I wanted to remain OEM with AC Delco BWI simply to avoid any interop hassle and the wife is fine with how the truck drives/feels when the shocks are new and or working properly. Currently however the fronts are completely blown out......all fluid has leaked out on both sides and there is literally ZERO dampening. We are bouncing around on the springs like a straight hooptie. It is awful.

So, I ordered a full set front and rear AC Delco from a provider on eBay
Genuine Pair Shock Absorber Front+Rear For 15-20 Escalade Suburban Tahoe Yukon | eBay
who seemed to have a good track record and legit operation although I am now second guessing this move. Keep following me here: I installed the rears and had no issues whatsoever. The rears were blown out too and really needed replacement. Now onto the fronts. I should also point out that about 2 years ago I installed the Maxx Suspensions leveling kit on the front end and it worked as advertised. Pretty much brought the front end to a level with the rear and eliminated the awful rake these trucks have from the factory. Here's where the trouble begins:

After unboxing the new coil and shock combo for the front, I was convinced these were in fact genuine OEM AC Delco BWI Magna-ride units. So I remove the original front right unit along with the Maxx Suspension spacers with no issue. I load the spacers onto the new unit and start trying to feed the assembly back into the tower. They will not go in. They seem to be clanging into the back side of tower not allowing the top mounting bolts to slide thru the 3 holes. I fiddle, I fight, I cuss, I wrangle and this sumbitch will not go in. What I notice during the process is the bottom of the strut/shock is hitting the lower control arm and wont allow for enough room to change the angle. I'm like there's

something wrong here. I take the new unit and lay it next to the one I pulled out and the new one is a full 2 inches longer........and, it may be an optical illusion but I swear the top plate of the assembly seems to be angled differently as well.
See attached pics.

Now there is only 2 possibilities here I believe but want some smarter more experienced people than me to weigh in. These new springs are either 2 inches longer now to eliminate the rake we all dislike, or my spring have collapsed and are now 2 inches shorter which I cannot believe. These springs are so dense and hefty I cannot see that being the case. I m baffled and have re-installed the old blown out units back on the truck while I try to figure this out. We had to drive from Dallas to New Orleans on this ratchet-ass shocks pulling a trailer to pick up my daughter who is graduating from Loyola law school. We had not choice and it was a 100% beat down of a ride. I am writing this from my hotel room and wanna solved this when we get back home. Smart people chime in.

The springs will never collapse unless the truck is from 1972 and has 1,000,000 miles. You can reuse your springs over and over unless they been cut or rusted out. OEMs are 3rd gen and they improved allot. The replacements lasted me over 120k miles. They are made by BWI now and come with lifetime warranty. There is allot of knock offs on eBay. I wouldn’t recommend buying unless they are legit. If your on your second set I would recommend ordering from gmpartsdirect the jounce bump stops and the upper/lower insulators as well. You can take it to any shop and they will put your assembly together using your original springs. Gmpartsdirect says you can reuse your springs. They do not drop like that, ever.

This is my truck stock with fresh front struts and rear shocks. The rear is always a few inches taller because when you put a trailer with max weight it levels out. When you raise the front to match the rear the truck looks stupid. If you are not towing then you could lower the rear. They also have the front lower for gas mileage and aerodynamics. If you are doing the front struts I would inspect the bushings and change the sway-bar end-links which is super cheap to do. The OEM parts is $30-$40 for the set. The mechanic has to remove the end-links when changing the strut anyways. These little end-links really matters on how the truck responds. I also did the rear sway-bar end-links but I chose Duralast Gold because they are better for the rears. They come with lifetime warranty and grease fittings. Don’t buy knock offs or aftermarket shocks/struts. The oems come with lifetime warranty and they fixed the seals to last over 100k. There is a reason why they are giving lifetime warranty. They are also 3rd gen now. After I changed my struts/shocks my truck is ridding better then new. They improved the parts. I also have the Michelin Defender 285/45 r22 tires. If you take your time and look you will find shocks for a great price. The Denali and LTZ also comes with magnetic ride and use the part numbers. I found someone on marketplace advertising Suburban Magentic Ride new in the box for $350 for the set. The rears are super easy to install. I paid my mechanic $150 for the install. The fronts you need a spring compressor to compress the spring to reassemble the assembly. You should get the torque specs to torque every thing correct. I remember the end-links are 18lbs, bushings 38lbs and the assembly are 37lbs for the top 3 and bottom 2.

Maybe I am not being very clear with my explanation. The spring and shocks (assembly) that are coming off the truck are OEM AC Delco/BWI. The new ones pictured right next to them are brand new AC Delco/BWI as well with the same part numbers. In my mind the springs on the new ones should be the exact same height as the old ones. I mean identical........and they are simply not. One of two things has happened here; either the new ones are longer as a revised part, or the old springs have settled/collapsed or whatever word you wanna use. But in my lifetime of owning and working on cars and trucks, I have never seen a coil spring shrink that much in height. Ostensibly, they are never supposed to do that as they are designed and engineered to do what's in their name, Spring back to the same height. I purchased these on eBay and they look every bit legit and OEM as you would expect. Now if you are telling me that there are counterfeit AC Delco BWI assemblies out there, then that is news to me.

The ones on eBay which they charge $600 for the set with the assembly are not legit. I know which ones you purchased. If you like to verify take your new assembly to Cadillac parts and ask for a OEM one and compare. Cadillac GM never sells the whole assembly if I recall. They always said to reuse your original spring. Looking at your picture they are not legit. I would like to see the other side of the label on the new assembly if you can post. Your OEM springs did not collapse. My 1972 lemans just had its original springs replaced last month. That’s how long they are good for. It you count the loops on the springs you will notice the new one has an extra loop. I paid $60 for a 8 pack of supposedly OEM injectors. They looked legit when I got them. They did look a little off but I thought maybe the newer ones are using different plastic. When installed my truck was running like crap and my fuel trims was terrible. I was able to get my money back but I spent time dealing with this.

Here’s a picture of the new ones. Have the same BWI logo which is what hooked me. I pressed and pressed the seller and they swore they were/are legit but of course they have reasons to lie and nothing to stop them. So here’s my question, why would they make these springs one loop more and 2 inches longer? To eliminate the rake these trucks have? If that’s the case, that’s why I’m using the Max Stack system of spacers. And to the comment that GM never sold full assemblies, they actually did by no longer do. They have already offered to give my money back which I think I’m gonna do. Where the best legit price on the struts/shocks only?

The definitely look counterfeit. The top part number should read 84977478. Yours reads 23312155. The color on the label looks off. I would order from an official gmparts website like gmpartsdirect.com. They are constantly selling so they will be manufactured in the past few months. You don’t want something that’s been on the shelf for years. Also you will let lifetime warranty on the part.

I would not put spacers on the front. If you don’t like the look then I would lower the rear. Inspect the upper and lower isolators/insulators and if they look good then reuse it. Inside there is jounce bump stops which it doesn’t matter if OEM or not. You can buy from autozone for $20 each. The upper and lower insulators/isolators get OEM. If you want to get new springs you can but when I did my 2008 Escalade with 207k I purchased springs and compared them to my old ones and there was no difference at all.

Here’s the link to the eBay assemblies. Genuine Shock Struts Front Rear For Cadillac 15-20 Escalade GMC Yukon Chevy | eBay.
ill hv to disagree about lowering the back instead of raising the front. We hv a ranch here in TX and lowering is a no go. Raising is a must as we hv soft sand on the ranch. I despise the raked dragster look which doesn’t seem to exist on the newest platform w IRS. Ours was completely level after installing the maxx stack that was engineered for these trucks and it didn’t change our MPG’s one bit

I think it looks better with a rake -- that's why I don't like the new body style. Every time I see one on the road it looks like the front is higher that the back which looks ridiculous to me -- like one of those old huge cadillacs or lincolns with the 10 foot hood and sitting lower in the back -- hate it! If or when I get a new Escalade, I'll have to get lowering links for the front for sure.

I don’t care at all about making it sit higher in general, just level. Cannot stand the rake with the front sitting way way lower. It simply looks wrong to me. It looks like they overlooked making it level like almost all cars on the road today. I love the new ones how they sit level. Everyone has an opinion and that’s mine. I didn’t come here to get into a debate over this topic, I simply wanted to see why shocks I purchased that had OEM AC Delco plastered all over the ad aren’t genuine. After trading many messages w the place I bought them he’s now claiming he was duped. His supplier swore up and down they were genuine before he purchased several sets, He’s offered a full refund which is honorable but the rears are already installed bc they came first. So I am sorta hamstrung at this point. I can get my money back for the fronts I guess but then I'll be second guessing the rears. I guess they are far easier to remove and install so if they turn to shit quickly I can replace them again.

To answer the question about how much I raised the front, I didn't measure but the kit allows you to raise it by several different stages, I think I went two inches which still left a little bit of rake but I was gonna fix that while doing this latest replacement. I was gonna have it ride perfectly level. And to the contention that when a trailer is hooked up it makes the back squat, not on mine as the rears just add air and level it out. On top of that, my trailer is light and the tongue weight is minimal. Anyway, I am gonna sleep on it.

and one last thing........you keep saying they look counterfeit and they very well may be, but like I stated previously the rears came first and they looked identical to the ones I took off. Even had a label on the box that was AC Delco and made in Mexico like most of AC Delco's stuff these days. They weighed the same, the metal stampings looked the same, the quality felt the same, the stickers looked the same aside from part numbers. Which begs the question, if they are gonna go to all the trouble to create counterfeits, why not have the same part number? The reason that didn't phase me is b/c these shocks have gone thru so many part number iterations and superscesions over the years I figured what's one more.

Wow……where to begin with your rude and uncalled for comments. Spyshops, did you get beat up and bullied as a kid? That’s typically the case when people start behaving the way you have here. Here’s one thing I know for a fact, you would NOT say the things you’ve said here if we were standing face to face. Or, maybe you would…….in that event you’d be taught an ole fashion west Texas lesson in manners. I knew everything I needed to know about you after seeing you have a hybrid Camry. No self respecting man is gonna own a hybrid Camry. Indefensible.

I had a fantastic childhood and it was magical. I grew up in a place where bill gates had a home, Eric Captain actually named his Album 471 Ocean Drive because it inspired him to make an album. The Bee Gees kids Ashley, Travis and Samatha was my friends down the street and Shaq was an off duty police officer. Miami Vice rented our house to film for 2 episodes. I did not have to grow up in Texas on a farm full of mosquito's and snakes where I have to wear boots. I was able to wear sandals and be barefoot. It was 80 degrees 365 days a years and the Ocean in my backyard was nice and warm. Beyonce made a video for her hit song drink in love there. Yes I keep a Hybrid Camry in my house for guests or when I want to be low-key which is my #7 vehicle. Have you ever heard of a car that you drive when you don’t want people to know you have money so you can get the upper hand? I would never suffer my family by taking them in a broken down truck. I would either rent one while my was in service or use one of my other vehicles. Growing up and the places I been too and things I have seen by the time I was 13 is something you will never see in your lifetime. No… I was not bullied as a kid to answer your question. When my struts go I take my car to Cadillac and pay the retail price because I don’t like to get my hands dirty or deal with knock offs and supporting China. You are from Texas you should know better. I bet your wife wears fake jewelry and purses too. Stop buying fakes and read the reviews before you buy.

Hey spyCLOWN, you started this and now you don't like what comes next........and you are dragging my wife into this on Mother's Day? Dude you are a fake and phony as they come. All that bragging and name dropping you just did shows how insecure you are and that you were DEFINITELY bullied as a kid and as an adult. You desperately want people think you have money. It's always been my experience that people who have it, don't talk about especially here in TX. We see ya......People here on this forum know who you are now. Thanks, you did all the work for me. Bless your heart and your girly little sandals..........you actually typed the word sandals and didn't go back and erase it.

Manufacturers usually rake them because of towing. If you’re towing something the rear end is going to drop a bit. if you have airbags, it’s not something that really matters, but manufacturers aren’t going to make the trucks with airbags level while making the standard suspension raked. They’re just gonna make them all raked. They are also trying to squeeze every bit of MPG out of it. And you are going to get slightly lower mileage if it’s leveled in the front. Most of the time it’s not a noticeable difference but there is a slight difference. And they’re trying to squeeze every MPG they can out of it.

The rake on air suspension 2021+ GM SUVs is an easy fix by just installing a different length linkage on the height sensor in the front. It causes the air suspension to raise up higher in the front. It’s probably the same case with your ram.

I guess your senseless and probably never been to the beach so you wouldn’t know that you wear sandles not boots. Good luck I am done talking to you and God Bless you.

Why is it that everytime I turn around SpyShops Ny you are arguing and bulling people. It seems like if it ain’t your way it ain’t no way. Once again OEM is not the only answer when it comes to parts on this truck. You practically hyperventilate when people have their own opinions. Stop being rude when giving advice, it brings out the ugly in you. 😂😂

I have a right to my opinion. I have seen many members buy aftermarket and regret it a month later. When someone asks for advice for shocks I will always say to get OEM and bring up the point that they come with lifetime warranty now. I helped allot of people that owned the 2007-2014 and 2015-2020. I don’t why you are saying that you always see me arguing and bullying people. This is not true.

It’s true because you have done it with me on several occasions. At this point it’s like prison SpyShops now that you have done a lot of negative turn it around and start being a positive member of this society. People will start to respect you more when you also acknowledge and respect the opinions of others. You are knowledgeable and well….. The lifters got you for a second time even with Cadillac’s help.🤣🤣🤣🤣. I commend you for admitting it. It just goes to show OEM ain’t always the way to go..
