2018 ATS halogen headlight bulb upgrade?

675 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  dancoleman02828
The prjector beam halogen headlights on my ATS are too yellowish and dim for my taste. They kinda suck at night in the rain. I'd like something a lot brighter and whiter. Has anyone had luck with upgrades?

Use the Advanced Search function (you can limit it to just the ATS forums) to find other threads about switching the halogens for HID or LED. Good luck!

LED Headlight kit as Halogen replacement?
If the original low beam bulbs are Wagner or Sylvania halogens they may be the yellowish 3100K types. Get into the manufacturer's bulb specs white papers.

I have had great success with the (expensive) PIAA 4100K Intense White halogens, and no wiring/ballast changes required. Other manufacturers make halogens that are quite a bit brighter than the stock bulbs but you sacrifice some life with the upscale bulbs ......... and above 5500K or 6000K you actually put less light down the road.

I suspect the housing and basic headlight assembly is a major limiting factor. I have four current GM vehicles and even though my ATS has the premium trim package with HID headlights it has the poorest lighting of the group.

The intensity is fine with the HID system but it doesn't provide nearly the coverage width of my other GM vehicles. My 2021 Camaro is built on the same platform as the ATS but its LED headlights are in a different class with far more effective lighting in low than the ATS provides in high and it is a huge difference when both are set to high. It, along with my Corvette (LED) and GMC 2500HD (HID), provide great coverage forward with good side illumination which is so important with the amount of deer in the area. I don't dislike driving my ATS at night but I definitely prefer the other vehicles.

So, I upgraded my headlights by having the Arc Lighting Xtreme Series installed. Holy crap is the difference huge! It's only been a few days but so far I am impressed.

How is the color temperature and the beam pattern? A few years I put some cheaper Cougar Motors 6500K LED's in my winter beater Mercury Milan's projector low beams and the color temp is a little cool for the best lighting and the beam pattern was good enough (considering where it started). Last year I put Firehawk 6000K 20k lumen (hah!) in the reflector high beams and the pattern is a bit too focused foward and the color definitely cooler and bluer than I would like, but they do put out a lot of light! I have yet to see a company come out with a 4000-4500K LED drop in, which is where my ATS's HID's are at - I much prefer that color range for visibility.
