Yesterday while driving slightly spirited, the A/C started blowing hot air. I have found that the compressor was not running. I checked fuses and compressor clutch relay, all ok. Then I recovered the freon, vac down and recharge with 19.2 oz 134a. Compressor still would not run. After testing the relay control circuit I found that the relay is not getting the signal to switch it on. But here is another problem, when I jump rhe relay and the compressor does run, none of the lines get cold and the pressures of the freon do not change.
I'm thinking that the compressor is bad, but I don't know why the car won't switch the relay on. The HVAC controller indicates that the A/C is on. I work on A/C systems all the time on class 8 heavy trucks and they are pretty simple. Not sure how much computer control is involved with the Cadillac. But it sure looks like a bitch to work on. Has anyone had this problem and what would you do? Wife will not be happy without cold air when it's 100 here!

Connected scanner code p0116 active, has to do with coolant temp. I noticed the coolant temp Guage stayed on cold and engine fan running on high excessively. Cleared codes, coolant temp now reads correct, fan went to low speed and the A/C system came back online. I guess I have a lot to learn about this car.

If the thermostat is stuck open on many GM cars, the engine doesn't come up to expected temperature and the ECM will turn the fan on high and disable the A/C because it assumes the coolant temperature sensor may be bad; it will also zero out the temperature gauge reading. Of course a bad temperature sensor will cause the same scenario.

I read the GM troubleshooting tree for this code. Upon start up the ECM compares the coolant temp sensor reading to the intake air temp sensor reading. If they are not close to the same the code will go active. The IAT sensor is combined with the MAF sensor. This car also has code p0170 I think that's the number, for bank 1 lean. They could be related because of the MAF, or it could have more than one problem . I have read where people have replaced the coolant temp sensor and didn't fix it. Also saw a post about block heaters causing this code. Not sure how they disable the AC but jumping the compressor relay will make it turn, but system will not get the low side line cold at all. When I get this figured out, I'll post what I found. Damn glad I don't have to change that AC compressor.

I'm not sure I'm following you right, and I work on A/C systems. I did the same recharge to my 2013 ATS and it freezes me out, works great.
The compressor would run, but no cold air out came of the vents? Is this a setting issue with the controls possibly? Then when you cleared the code the A/C worked like normal? I'm like you, I want to learn how these systems are designed to work.

I would think that with the compressor running the gauges would reflect pressures, because it should be working correctly. The compressor is drawing in low pressure gas and discharging high pressure gas. But the gauges show that this isn't happening. It there a shut off solenoid somewhere in the lines?
There must be something in the design of this system that I haven't heard of. I am like you, I have all the A/C tools and equipment.

Has anyone recently addressed error code P0116, coolant temperature sensor? The engine fan runs from the moment the engine starts, and remains on for a period of time after engine is turned off. Temp gauge sits at C during driving. I had one independent garage say they couldn't/wouldn't do the job. Thanks for any feedback.
