Just purchased a 2012 CTS w/a 3.0 liter V6 last week. Fell in love with the car in general but... This is my 9th overall cadi, all pre-owned since 1992. Up until 2014 I had a limo service and must say all cars served well in the industry. However, everyone of my cadi's, all with V8's until now, had oil leaks. It was my hope after several 4.6 liter V8's and 2 Northstars, that my leaking days might be behind me. All that these luxury cars cost, you'd think they'd produce an engine with sound gaskets and proper torquing to avoid this. Having said that, not once did I spend the big bucks to fix leaks. None of the leaks I've had to this point, were relevant enough to notice on the dip stick but just enough to make for a messy area around the leak and an oily wetness underneath on the bottom of the oil pan, etc. As for the most recent 3.0 V6, my mechanic choose to clean the area of the leak at the top of the timing chain cover on the right side of the engine and have me drive it some to try and gauge the severity of the leak. I have a 30 day 1K miles warranty on the engine, trans and rear but don't know if it includes leaks. Colleagues tell me to return the car and look for another. But I don't believe I have that legal right. All the laws seem to protect the dealer and not the consumer. I did phone the dealer regarding the leak and the coverage and he's to get back to me. If anyone has any tips or advice, I'd greatly appreciate it. Obviously I'm concerned with having just taken on a 5 1/2 year auto loan payment, that this could be the one leak of relevance. If that's the case, then I'm in deep do do. It looks like my best case scenario is to add one more oil leaking Cadillac to my list. Thanks for reading.

Tony, very little if any talk of oil leaks in this forum and the 2nd generation has run its full course and they are onto a 3rd gen. Most are 3.6 liter engines though. Based on a very large sample size of posts here, I don't think you can characterize CTS as an Oil Leaker. Seems to me you have an isolated case though so I can see why you would be frustrated after your past experiences with Northstars.

I haven't read where many of these leak. You must have a knack for finding the engines with timing chain cover leaks, I'm sorry to say. And this engine is used in many GM cars, not just Caddys.

Thank you all for your comments and concern! To my knowledge, this is my first timing chain cover leak. All the others have been various other places. Since my mechanic cleaned the areas that showed the freshest oil drip-age, I'm not seeing any new fresh oil just some older caked on stuff mainly on the top of the timing chain cover and where it has run on to the alternator. Although, I've only put about 100 miles on the car since checking and cleaning, which I know may not be enough time and mileage for the gun to smoke, so to speak. Not seeing any evidence of major leaking, my mechanic thinks I'd be wasting my time having the dealers shop look at it and that drive is about an each way as they said they'd check it out. As far as any previous timing chain replacement goes, and I've read that there has been some timing chain issues (mainly with the 3.6), the car-fax report doesn't reflect that. I guess I'm between a rock and a hard place with having this checked out. My appointment is tomorrow morning. I do really like the car as it is clean and was kept really nice as well as handles somewhat like a sports car. I guess I'll just have to gnaw it over and make a decision today. Thanks again!
