I've been hearing this "clunking" sound on the front left for a few weeks. Thought it was possibly a CV joint, so took it to the dealer yesterday. They tell me it is a bad strut and that I will need to replace both front struts at a cost of over $1000. The mechanic says there are not aftermarket shocks available so the parts alone are about $600. So first, can anybody confirm this is true? Second, I am very mechanically inclined so is this something I can tackle myself? Anything unusual with the procedure? And do I have to replace BOTH? Finally, would it be advisable to try to locate one or both struts at a salvage yard? Oh, one other thing...does anybody make a repair manual for this vehicle...other than the factory manual?

Base and Luxury are Different from Performance and Premium AWD

The real time damping struts on AWD performance and premium trims are more expensive. Regular struts on luxury, base, and fwd performance models are the cheaper ones.

I believe you can source the parts for a lot less than GM parts!
I'm also looking to get the same fix done but I'm under warranty.
