So I need a new timing chain and timing chain guides. I’ve known about this for about a yr now. (I know, should have been replaced when I first found out about the issue) anyway, a yr later and and I set up the appointment to get it done. Now I guess they are recommending that the oil pump is replaced at the same time. Can someone shed some light on the reason the oil pump needs to be replaced?

Why not. You're partially there with it, and timing chain tensioners are hydraulicly operated. Better to do it than not to do it.
