I live in a cold climate here in Canada and also only use the nav feature on my ESV occasionally when I am in an area that I am unfamiliar with.
My question concerns the Nav unit itself as I know it is part of the audio system.

If I am just running the sound system and not using Nav, does the disk continue to spin in the Nav unit or only when I turn on the Nav system? It appears to me that it runs all the time and that I should be removing it and placing it in the DVD disk holder when not in use. The operator's manual speaks to it taking time to start when cold and suggests not to use it until the vehicle warms up but no other info that I could find in regards to getting into the vehicle at -30 and whether or not the unit is running or not.

I am planning on removing the disk in the cold if it still is turning inside the unit upon start up and then installing it only when needed.

Just wondering what everyone else is doing with these older Nav units seeing mine is a 2010.

Thanx everyone for your assistance in advance.

Yes it spins when not in use. The proper thing to do is remove it when not in use, IMHO.

Of course I'm sure very few do this, and will probably soon chime in with claims of having never removed theirs for 150k miles and the unit still functions properly.

I figured as much as it will give Disk Error and after a couple of minutes will function fine. If the vehicle is warm then no issues at all so I think you have confirmed my line of thinking and will proceed to take the disk out when not in use. There is a lot of room for storage in the Dog House anyway.
