I'm interested in a 2006-current DTS are these caddys known for any issues like the ones before them? I know the previous generation 2000-2005 had their share of problems but is this the case with the current model? Thanks for any help guys.

I had one 2006 that got destroyed in my garage fire.
It had 40,000 on it.
I bought another new 2006.
I now have almost 60,000 on it.
Thats 100,000 miles total.
A few minor issues with them when they were brand new. (all electrical)
All fixed under warranty.
Never anything major.
Everything works as designed.
Does not use oil.
Does not leak oil.
At least not yet. :stirpot:

Ditto to TexasJim, except no fire. Minor correctable issues.

Here is an excellent site with some very interesting posts:

From what I've read the oil pan leak was on pre 2006 models.

I really like the DTS but all the issues I've read about the northstar engine is holding me back a bit. Have any of the northstars issues been corrected in these later models? If not what if any problem are/aren't covered under a warrenty? does anyone here know what the GM warrenty covers on these cars or where I can get a list of this? thanks

Which one are you refering to?
I've read several posts on the NAV system.
The last I remember was regarding leaving the DVD in the system.

If you know anyone that has the new V4 disk...You can update your FIRMWARE with the V4 disk and STILL USE the V3 disk.

This will add the clock to the nav screen. I am not sure what else it adds.
I put my V3 disk back in for a few minutes...AFTER I updated to the V4. It seemed to work ok. I didn't go driving, but it booted ok and came up to the proper screen.

I will be updating my son's 2007 GMC Denali this weekend. I will know more then.

The headbolt/headgasket issue was corrected after the 2000 model.
I have not heard of any oil leaks in the newer ones.

As for the warranty...It should cover ANYTHING that goes wrong.
All the way from a minor check engine light, to a catastrophic engine failure to an electrical issue.

ANYTHING that goes wrong should be covered under the warranty.

I love the NorthStar engine.
Plenty of power, smooth operation, good fuel economy for a big heavy car.

As I said in an earlier post, I have put 100,000 miles on the 2 that I have owned, with "ZERO" engine issues.

On a recent trip from S. Carolina to Texas, I was running along with my Brother-in-law who was driving a mid size Hyundai.
Every time we stopped for fuel, the Cadillac used very little more fuel than his little car. He could hardly believe it. I thought it was funny. :) :)

Jim,

No I had not read your post on the NAV system.

That is an excellent idea and I’ll check it out. I am hoping that the dealer will assist me in getting the latest version as I have received all my free updates from the NAV center.

Thanks for the excellent suggestion.

I put 33,000 New York City miles on my 2006 - other than some wind noise from the sunroof when it was closed and one TPMS sensor that failed, nothing went wrong. Most reliable car I have owned. Cheap to maintain - it had one oil change and tire rotation about every 8 months, and needed a brake job at 27,000 miles. If GM was leasing anything right now, there would be another one in my garage. They are great cars, you will enjoy a DTS very much.

Learn to do brake jobs yourself. Very easy. Just a few regular tools. Just have an experienced mechanic look over your shoulder on the first one or two brake jobs. (I am assuming you maintain more than one car for family.) My wife is very well trained with bleeding the brakes.

Total cost of brake job for 2 wheels: perhaps $100 (including cost of C clamp and 2 or 3 wrenches). Brake pads are about $40 to $75, depending on flavor.

Time = 1.5 hrs for learner.

Whoops. You will also need a jack stand plus your regular jack. Safety, you know.

This is the second time I've heard this. Do you know exactly what they did to "fix" it? We've had 3 Devilles in the family and all were reduced to scrap at 100k miles. Oil leaks, head gasket leaks, transmission problems. They're great cars, but don't expect to get more than 100k out of them. So, when the head gaskets went bad on my mom's 2002, my parents were reluctant to get another one.

But they did.

Mom came home with a "new" (to her) 2007 "Performance" model last night. It's beautiful, but will it be junk at 100k? Stickered at $56k, bought it for less than half that.

My wife purchased an 06 DTS with 34k kms on it last September. Our first Cadillac it replaced an absolutely trouble free 04 Buick LeSabre with over 100k kms on it. Main reason for buying it was as a good and roomy highway cruiser for our annual trip from Nova Scotia to Florida.

Positives: Beautiful looking car, it was in mint condition, comfortable multi adjustible seats, very quiet and smooth on the highway, all kinds of gadgets, one I like is the warning system for parking. The engine is smooth, powerful and relatively fuel efficient (not as good as the Buick V6). Trunk is huge, and we need this for the trip.

Negatives: Unfortunately we have been in the service department more often than ever with the Buicks. First we noticed the heated/cooled seats did not work. Then we got a recall for the windshield wash heater. On the trip to Florida almost all the anti freeze came out (probably due to the service dept leaving the top off the reservoir); in Florida we got the seat heaters fixed, and the recall looked after. It was also in for a knocking noise in the back which turned out to be a release valve in the gas tank. After a tire rotation we needed a new tire pressure monitor sensor. A new cabin air filter cost $90! Trip home was uneventful, but after we got here the driver's door stopper had to be replaced, we needed a new tie rod end, and after it had been in for those repairs the battery was dead three days later.

We still love the car in spite of these issues, but they are annoying, and although a couple of them could be blamed on service, they are just too numerous to make me feel we have a reliable car. We will probably keep it though as you cant get much for it. I think we'll definitely be getting the extended warranty though.

We had five Buicks and never had this many problems. The last one hadn't even had a brake job at over 100,000 kms and all it ever needed was regular oil changes.

I haven't had any issues yet. However my driver side heated and cooling doesnt work but all the others do. I'm glad someone found out what that knocking sound was. I thought it was the air pump. I never paid attention to it til my girl said wtf is that noise, lol. Just be aware that the purchase of this car especially if you get it in black makes the police want to take a look. For some reason the cops love me. Someone commented on the sunroof wind noise. If you close the slider it pretty much goes away but I ride windows down most of the time anyway. Only thing that will be an issue is the cost of maintenance. Lucky for me my friend is mexican and all he wants is a case of coronas to help me with my car. Fair trade in my opinion. ;) If you decide to get one go for the performance model. I found out about those after I got mine but it was a steal anyways. :cool2:

I just took my 2006 DTS in for a check up. It has 49K miles. They found a stuck airflow actuator, Leaking oil level sensor, and crossover coolant gaskets leaking. Glad I took it in before the warranty expired. I have had no issues with the car at all. These items showed up with a code reader.

Has anyone had any brake shimmy issues on a 2006 DTS? In Nov 08 the rotors were turned. The problem seemed to be corrected for a couple weeks then started again. Happens when braking hard down a grade or a quick stop. Pulled the wheels again Aug 09 (29,000 miles) because shimmy is severe. Appears to be glazing on the rotors. The pads are not worn, the rotors are parallel within a thousandth on all 4 wheels.
