2006 DTS Parking Brake Stuck on Passenger Side

Doing the rear brakes and noticed that the Parking brake lever at the caliper
was closed. Pried it with a screw driver and it opened. I do regularly use the
parking brake and we don't notice any smell. The pad wear side to side is
surprisingly even. Is it possible that when moving with some vibration it
does eventually release?
Is it likely the cable or something in the caliper?
Suggested repair procedure?

TIA Pete

Re: 2006 DTS Parking Brake Stuck on Passenger Side

My 2004 Deville got water in the parking brake line. On mornings in the 20's, it wouldn't release fully for a few seconds. I think they sprayed WD40 up the cable (it displaces water), but it's been a while. I thought it was sluggish because the engine was still cold until they told me the pads were shot.

I replaced the rear pads with Wagner Thermo Quiet ceramics and turned in the
piston as is normally required. Noticed that the parking brake lever on the
passenger side was not moving, did not return.

The odd thing is that the lever moves full range on the driver's side but it is
not holding the wheel. How does the auto adjust work, does applying the
parking brake ratchet the piston so do I have to pump it to adjust or
something else?
I've tried applying it 10 times but still not tight.

Your two threads on the same subject have been merged into this one.

Check the two rear parking brake cables where they enter the single cable equalizer. The two cables connect to one, thence forward to the floor pan entry to the parking brake mechanism.

If the replacement pads are the same thickness as the originals were then the cables should be about even - and there's a tension spring on each, too - at each caliper.

One is about sticking, the other is about how they auto adjust.
Thanks for the diagram.

I have a feeling that the side that was stuck would not auto adjust because
the lever did not go back and forth due to it being stuck.
I managed to free it enough so that it goes about half way, not sure if that
is enough for it to adjust.

Thanks, I just looked them up a few days ago and will get replacements as needed.

They have tightened up after another 10 or 20 applications of the parking brake,
they now hold the car stopped. I have to get the car up on stands and take a
look/grease the cable.
