2006 BMW 550i, the REAL competition!

From what I see, the new 550i is more of a comparo to our CTS-V than the M3 or M5. The M3 and M5 consider themselves to be PURE racing thorough-breads. The price on the M5 takes itself out of our class.
The M3 is just too small and agile, it is not a mid-size luxury sports sedan. Heck, it's not even a sedan!!
Now take the new BMW 550i. It's a Luxury performance beast. Seems to flaunt everything our's does. Similar prices even.

On paper, maybe. However if the M5 can't even pair up to a V in performance and price, what would make us believe a basic 5 series would. To the few comparing the V to other cars, this will be one to include as well.

However as much as I keep reading the posts of potential buyers, the V has something special going on. The only manufacturer(s) even close to the V in comparison are the SRT-8's. Mostly because of price and performance. Let them finally decide to put in a manual tranny, and it's going to be a real grudge match in more areas than just quarter mile times. That would be the "Nemesis".

I totally agree - however, if someone is looking for the BEST luxury/sport sedan in the 50k price-range, doesn't it make the most sense to look at this car? If your answer is yes, then lets see what happens when we match these cars, apples for apples. Remember, it's not even out yet.

Then, we can say - if it even comes close to or even best's the 80k BMW SUPER car on some levels, its all gravy.

Did I miss something? Where did a $46,874 MSRP come from for the V???

That even sounds lower than dealer invoice....

Recently did a rolling-start tandom race with a 550i. He was in front. The 550i looked very new, but had permanent license plates. When he saw me in his rear view mirror he took off. We ran up to about 65 mph. I had no problem keeping up with him. I had plenty of throttle left, and my 1-2 shift was not a power/speed shift.

Sorry, I don't agree with the original post. The CTS is a tweener. Personally, since it is larger than an M3 and has more doors, I tend to personally compare it to the M5. But, at the same time, it's not quite as large as the M5 and like you said, is a lot cheaper.

Cadillac's V series is the performance pinnacle of the brand. The same is said for the M division for BMW and the AMG division of Daimler Benz. I compare the best with the best. Price is secondary. Pitting the CTS-V against a 550i, while the price is still favorable, they serve 2 different purposes. I'm betting most 550i owners weren't looking to hunt down CTS-V owners as soon as they were handed the keys. And while I think it's a great accomplishment to have such a mean machine, SRT-8 owners have even more reason to gloat with the prices they're paying.

The new M5 is bigger, faster and more expensive. Hopefully, I can get my V set up to the point where I can hang with the new M5 before I run into one. And with the STS-V coming out, that is a closer comparison. Once the RS4 and/if a 4 door M3 comes out, then I will make a direct comparison. Until then, I hate Hemis.

I don't think the STS-V is going to comparare favorably with the M5.
IMO, the CTS-V is a bit faster and handles better then the STS-V alone. GM missed the mark with the STS-V.

That goes without saying. In fact, if money were no object, a new M5 would be sitting in my driveway right now. As for missing the mark, what mark was that? The CTS-V looked lean and mean and ready to compete with the late M5 and M3. When you come only with a 6-speed MTX, that calls out a certain purpose. However, the STS-V comes only with an auto. And while it was also tuned at the 'Ring, it is more softly tuned.

I honestly think they targeted the past M5/M3 with the CTS-V and the E55/CLS55 with the STS-V. Whether it works, I don't know. AMG and M people tend to stay loyal and don't cross-shop. Maybe Cadillac is trying to lure in both.
