2005 SRX - High Mileage gift

I was gifted a 2005 SRX With the 3.6 engine. It has not been driven in years. It has 252k miles on it. I bought a new battery and with lots of luck I got it to run.

Obliviously it needs a full tune up, oil change, and tire realignment. The dashboard light up like a Christmas tree and many warnings come up on the radio display. My best guess it requires about a $1000.00 of TLC maintenance.

With it having so many miles, is it worth the 1 to 2k of maintenance? A lot of electrical issues, radio half works, back driving lights sometimes refuse to come on, the dash lights at night are too dim to be of use, The Brights come on when using a turn signal, etc...Obviously the engine runs very rough.

Any thoughts or opinions would be much appreciated.

Be careful, as a little bit of maintenance can snowball. And after you've sunk a couple grand into it and find it needs something else, you'll feel obligated to not waste the money already spent. Otoh, maybe it doesn't really need much. Are you gonna do the work? Or will you have to pay to have it done?

Thank everyone for their insights. Even though I know very little about cars I was going to take an OJT / DYI approach. I think if I dropped this off at a regular mechanic the labor would be through the Roof alone??
No rust issues that I can see. Just lots of issues that need to be fixed. My approach is/might be replace almost every item under the hood that I can get to minus a lift ??

Give it an oil change and clean the battery terminals real good. Then buy yourself an OBD2 tester (Harbor Freight sells one for $25) and start reading codes. Some things will be simple to fix, others will take a lot more effort but you will at least know what you're up against.

DO NOT - Just start replacing stuff without knowing it's actually a problem. Electrical components are expensive and not usually returnable. You will be amazed at how many things can be fixed with electrical contact cleaner and some wiggling.

You can learn this stuff if you want and with your low investment you might even come out ahead. But, the OBD2 tester can tell you if you need to call the scrapper so do that right away.

Cheers,

John
