SO i saw a commercial for a 2004 imapala SS and they were harping about how its it so fast because it has a supercharged engine. I wanted to know exactly how fast and the web says 240 hp for a supercharged v6 with dual exhaust etc. If my cts pulls 220 with no supercharger then what exactly is going on with the impalas? I thought the cars were pretty fast to begin with!

That wimpala isn't faster than the supercharged pontiacs, plus its FWD (no more RWD vs FWD discussions!!!) so I think around 7 seconds to 60 since it weighs more too. I'll look it up. No matter how fast, it shouldnt be called the SS. SS cars aren't about speed or even performance, they're about big hearty 350+ V8 engines and tire smokin RWD, even if it means getting to 60 in 10 seconds.

IMO, V8 and FWD dont go together, so RWD is the only option....... FWD is for 4 bangers!!!!

Dont doubt those SC 3800's. I have a Regal GS and run 14.6 in the 1/4. I know guys running 13's with these cars (and some are in the 12's!!)

Nobody said they can't be fast. Only a fool would even hint at that. The point is that the "SS" emblem used to mean something. It commanded respect. It meant RWD V8 power, and LOTS of it too. Unfortunately, GM decided to start splashing the logo on entirely TOO MANY vehicles that didn't deserve it in hopes of generating sales, and it seriously diluted what the "SS" stood for. Old-timers still remember what the "SS" meant and get pissed-off when GM seems to forget.

SS means raw rear wheel burning high torque, displacement north of 350 ci V8 power. Actual performance is second. I'd rather they made an 8 second to 60 500 c.i. RWD Chevy Impala instead of a 4 second to sixty 200 c.i. supercharged turbocharged Nitrous eating monster Front Driver. :D

I'd buy the new Marauder or Thunderbird before I buy any of these new Chevy "SS" vehicles. Soon every Chevy will have an SS option, even the Minivan. It will be a 2005 Chevy Venture SS featuring a new Hybrid engine making this big boy a ULEV at 50 city 60 highway, DVD entertainment, special SS badging, an optional engine that runs on natural gas, and soon to come a fuel cell engine in this SS!
