2004 CTS 3.6L Misfire problem

I just bought a 2004 CTS 3.6L and it has an issue already.

The problem apparently relates to cylinder 1 misfires (at least that is what the OBD II system reports).

When accelerating uphill, the car shudders like it is losing and regaining power and the check engine light (CEL) flashes.

It has now gotten worse in that the CEL stays on where it used to just flash.

I have tried seafoaming the engine and it just continues.

I think the problem is the spark plug in cylinder 1. What are the chances that is the problem?

I know it could also be a coil pack or the injector or etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

Also, how the heck do I get the very back bolt out of the upper intake part on top of the plugs?

What tool is required?

Na man, it's all good. The ecm is the electronic control module. My car started to act up bad and threw a bunch of codes for cylinder 5. They checked all, and my ecm was bad. They said around 65-80k miles they seem to go out regularly. Def check the plugs, coils, wires, but I bet it's the ecm. They are known to go bad after a bit.

Here's a pic of my new ecm they put in and its location. It's the new shiny piece with the hoses on it. They are not cheap and I believe have to be programmed. My bill was $1100 if I did not have coverage. OUCH!!

Hello all,

Its an amazing forum. I got the same trouble with my CTS 04, 3.6l. I like to work on it as i have to save money which is a lot when it comes to dealership.

Its throwing up the codes for misfire cyclinder 6. I did the same changed plugs original ones AC Delco. still same issue. It has 85000 miles on it. Mechanic told me to open and change the fuel injector for cyclinder 6. I opened this up. it looks clean. I consults dealership they say it look okay. unless i replace it with the new one.

I am kind of confused now. Is it ECM? as every one here say its ECM?

How can in simple I check ECM, i know where it is. I can fix some stuff. Can I open it up and take it to the dealership as ask them if they can check it? is there any way I can check this one?

I will really appreciate your help. I am in deep trouble this CTS is messing up. I am still CTS fan and want to upgrade to 2008. Please help! will appreciate it.

I had the same problem a couple months back on my 05' 3.6l depending on the codes your pulling up it could be the ECM or simply the coil pack. Had code P0301 indicating a misfire on cylinder 1. Changed the coil pack and all 6 spark plugs and she runs better than the day I bought it. Good chance though its the coil over the ECM. It ended up costing me $400 when all was said and done but most of the cost was from the labor due to having to take off the upper intake to get to the coil.

Start w the cheapest thing. Spark plugs then move to the coil pak, injectors replace all intake gaskets (which has to be done for the plugs) before you move to the ecm which is one of the more expensive options. Clean all of the fittings for the coil pack as well. Myself along w many other people on this forum and friends that have cts`s have had these problems all within the last month. I replaced all my plugs and upper intake gasket (which was shot to shit) and solved my misfire in cylinder 1.

Had PCM injector driver go out at 65k had coil go out at 115k Changing the chains and plugs at 120k. When disassembling found that three more coils were starting to crack so I opted to replace them all to take care of the potential issues. Found factory coils in a CARQUEST box saved about 25$ a coil. Not many people make aftermarket parts for these vehicles.
