Just purchased with 111,000 on it previous owners father ran a oil change shop so he changed the oil every 2500 miles with pennzoil synthetic. However according to the sticker he used 10w30. It doesn't appear to be using any oil would it be ok to switch to 5w30 pennzoil ultra when I get a oil change?

Either of those weights are perfectly fine for your 03 N*.... switching over to 5w30 pennzoil ultra will be no problem. Your car takes 7.5 quarts of oil with a filter change.... the full mark on the dipstick is at the middle of the XXXXXXXXX's on the dipstick.

Yup............... me, too. I'm the one that likes Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 and a WIX 51522 filter. 7.5 quarts, total. Middle of the hashmark.

i live in hot country. i usually put Amsoil 20W50 in it. It run very quiet and no problem.
my averange speed is 20km.h. i'm trying to mod the fan run sooner. it will protect the engine better.
i get 112.000 miles in it now.

:tisk: 5W30 or 10W30, nothing higher and as Sub said, leave the fans alone.

What makes you think that running the fans sooner will "protect the engine better"?

Never run 20W-50 (motorcycle) oil in a Northstar. Your engine is designed for 5W-30.

There is no reason to change the fan settings. That will accomplish exactly nothing. Your cooling system is designed to run at about 200 degrees and modifying it will affect engine performance - negatively.

Did you ever replace the incorrect Mr. Gasket thermostat with the correct GM 180 degree unit ??

i still keep the Mr Gasket. i put back the Original and the heat a little bit more in slow traffic.
when the engine is cool..all the electric diagram is cooler and electric is better. The ECM of Deville in the black box near the air filter. if the ECM too hot..it is easy to die.
About the engine. The lower temp will give every gasket more realiable. Less leaking as possible and the head gasket. i think most of the Northstar blow the head gasket because it run too hot. DO you think it is design to fail the head gasket ?

Have you test when the Norhstar run at 200 or more it loose hp..when it run at 180 or 192 the engine drag faster..run better.

Go read a new sticky thread in Northstar Performance/Technical Discussions forum.

PCM will always get fresh air from the front of the car because of the airbox design. PCM will not quit because of normal engine temperature. It won't quit when the engine overheats either.

I don't know where you learned the more heat less power thing, but that doesn't sound very credible to me.

i agree, i just changed my oil and i put 5w30 pennzoil ultra and a k&n oil filter. it is very hot in texas, maybe 10w30 might have been better.
Your (our) engines are spec'd for 5W-30 oils. Roller cam followers. You're perfectly fine in Texas.

Use a WIX 51522 filter instead of an overpriced aftermarket boutique filter. :sneaky:

Just had it changed for the 5w30 seems to idle a hair lower than before. Told shop only to use 7.5 and asked what they normally do he said 7 3/4 to 8 quarts for northstars and gave me bit of a strange look. Felt like when you have to send food back at a restaurant except I had a window to make sure they didn't spit in the food.

Go out and look at your dipstick (the one in the car) - the engine oil level should be in the lower half of the hashmark after sitting for a while. If the Oil Doodle checked everything, make sure there is NO FLUID on the transmission dipstick with the engine OFF - it's a dry sump transmission and is checked HOT, not warm, idling in P.
