2002 STS Test Drive...So Close yet So Far

Evenin' from NW Florida,
I just got home from Atlanta and my 10th test drive of a Cadillac. 4 CTSs' and 6 SLS/STSs'. This was my 3rd STS and I would have bought the car IF it had been as advertised. I am still awaiting the Dealer's decision on whether or not they will fix what was wrong. 48 hours....
1. Exterior inspection revealed a missing spare tire. All the rust on the retention bolt alerted me to moisture so I rubbed my hand on the carpet and you guessed it...flooded trunk...soaked...
2. Test drive revealed noticeable front end shaking at 65, 70, smooth at 72, shaking at 75 on up. W.O.T. was excellent...no smoke. New Michellins, new brakes, computer balance, etc...all done at a Dodge Dealership. This is my 3rd Seville, 01-03, to have the shakes. Only 3 have not had the shakes...I'm battin' .500.
3. After shutdown I waited a few minutes, got on my back, and witnessed an oil seep, not leak, from the vicinity of the rear main bearing. IF I've read it once I've read it a dozen times here....IF the N* you are looking to buy has any oil leaks walk away.
Bottom line is IF it had not been for ALL of you and your experience with the 98-03 Sevilles' I would have done what????
I doubt seriously the Dealer will deliver the car to Cadillac to have the work done. I won this car on an eBay no reserve auction at $15,000. The Dealer immediately agreed to refund 100% of my air travel today because the car was advertised as having 'Absolutely Nothing Wrong'.
Looks great, sounds great(Bose), stops great, now if we can just get the rod running right...to be continued....

Keep looking, you'll find one. I just scored an '02 SLS with 13K on it. Factory certified to 6yrs/100K. This dealer seems to only look for very low mile cars. The car was as advertized, though I did find a trunk leak which has since been fixed under warranty along with a few other items. I also had the vibration problem and a road force balalnce curred that. When I call this dealer and explained the problem, they said "send us the bills (one for a spin balance that did not cure the problem, then one for a raod force balance, that did) and we will make it right and cut you a check". I was impressed as they are in Massilon Oh. and I am in Ill. The sales man I delt with is Art Lewis at Progressive Cadillac/Dodge if you are interested. I flew in to Canton in the evening and Art picked me up at the motel in the morning. I was on the road home by 1030. All in all I was very happy with the car, the salesman and the dealership. If you are willing to travel up there, check them out and see what they have. Tell Art Larry sent you. Good luck.

If this dealership and sales person are as good as you write (and I sincerely believe they are) I would (If I were you) get the email address of the dealer and or sales person and post it here. Yeah, I know, kickbacks...and the like, but that is worthy information that many forum members could use.

It is very possible for the dealer to email current inventory with or without pictures to the perspective shopper. Just my 2¢.

When I got my 96, it had 33k on it and a vibration at highway speed. I tried everything to get that to go away and nothing cured it. Expensive balance jobs, alignments, all for naught. Until one day I hit some construction debris in the road and had a blowout. On the spare tire there was no vibration. I had it replaced and they told me the tire had a torn cord inside. He showed it to me and it was a subtle effect, but it was definitely the source of the problem. New Michelin Harmonys and no vibration problems. My dad has had or worked on lots of Cadillacs with the XW4 (OEM) Michelins and two bad tires out of the lot. The XW4s aren't rated very well by Consumer Reports either, so that's why I went with the Harmonys. Michelin also recommended the Harmonys over the XW4s even though they were the same price. Very happy with the Harmonys and the X Ones that I had before. I won't put XW4s on this car again. It might be worth having that checked out if you still have a vibration problem. If you've had them balanced and still have a vibration, and especially if it changes when you have the tires rotated, that could be the problem. Just my 2 cents.

I don't think you can get XW4's any longer. When I went to replace mine over a years ago I wanted XW4's because I had good luck yuo them and got 86K out of them but they were unavailable so I went with Symmetry. No complaints there either.

I think Progressive has a web site but if not I will be glad to call Art and get any info from him if anyone is interested.

Good point Ranger. When I was originally in the market for new tires, I looked for the XW4s and only found one place in St. Charles, IL that had them. If someone REALLY wants the XW4s, they are available at Tire Rack (www.tirerack.com) but they say "Low Stock," so they are probably out of production and supplies are running low. You can see them here:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/OETir...g=S&minLoad=S&search=tires&vehicleSearch=true

But, again, Consumer Reports, Michelin, and I would recommend something other than the XW4.

He can reseal my halfcase and oil pan ,rear main or anything it needs,But not all reseals reseal all the time. But it worth the trie for

Gentlemen,
Thanks for the feedback. FTR the skins were Michellins...XV4s, 6 mos old, mounted by the Chrysler Dealership and computer balanced...not road forced. FTR The seepage was after a 25+ mile flight test and 30 minutes of cool down. Neglibile by aviation standards BUT present nonetheless. Forgot to mention the moisture under the floormats but I suspect that the guys doing the detailing/shampooing put the mats back in before the carpet had a chance to dry. Fortunately their washing revealed the trunk leakage. FTR Also noticed what I would call a significant difference between the STS (3.71) and the SLS MPG Data. 25mpg 'Instant' was my best on a 7 mile stretch with cruise locked at 70mph. Compared to the SLS (3.11) final drive under like circumstances I clocked 30.4mpg. The rear end says it all on mpgs....Should have an answer by tomorrow pm on what they want to do. IF Cadillac will fix everything, stand by their word and work, I will still buy the car...

Funny this is the dealer I take or use to take my car to for service. They are very poor with service, break more then they fix. Never have been able to make a deal with them. When I was shopping for my STS they had a used car for $32K. Said we'll make you a deal $28K. It was in their ad the very next morning for $26K. These dealers are funny, they do Ebay but are not concerned with a face to face long term relationship. Tells me something right there.
Gentlemen,

I'd like to bring closure to this thread. The bottom line is I was reimbursed, finally, 100% of my airfare, and told in no uncertain terms that the Dealership, NW Atlanta Chrysler Dodge Jeep, that they would not fix the car, and the seller immediately froze his eBay account in order to prevent any negative feedback from being posted.

I have since moved on and still have the on going saga on the Yankee 2002 SLS.

To be continued,

JP
