2002 Deville base. I was driving up mammoth mt. And temp which was normally always at the middle. Then it overheats. And I pull over to let it cool. Temp got all the way up to max hot. I let it cool and add about 1.5 gallon of water. It overheats in another 10 miles at 50 mph. I pull over to let cool again. I drove really slow at 35 mph And this time it did not overheat. I'm really scared to drive home. It's about 500 miles home. I open the coolant cap this morning and I smell exhaust gas. Any suggestions?

Re: 2002 Seville overheat

Perform a cylinder block exhaust gas test and surf through this forum, Seville, Engines; Northstar and Tech Tips for possible causes of coolant loss and overheating in a Northstar.

Is the water pump drive system in perfect condition ? When on an extended road trip do you do underhood checks each morning ? ........... coolant level checks ?

500 miles from familiar territory and a mysterious overheat condition is not fun.

===========================

start with the basics -

inspect the waterpump drive belt -

check for coolant leaks -

check the PURGE LINE for proper coolant flow -

if the above items don't offer any clues -
do the BLOCK TEST -

Does not sound like you're gonna make it home.

Suggestions?
Find a god shop that knows how to R &R a Northstar HG, install inserts and has done it before.

HAHA Halleluah i made it home!!!
sorry for my late response, didnt have internet for few days
so my 2002 northstar overheated, I waited till engine temp return to middle, add 1 gallon water then drove 100 miles, did this for 2 times, i notice my temp would tick up by one tick every time going uphills, so i took it easy and drove at 55 - 60 MPH, keeping the RPM under 2000. i also had the heater on at max...
anyways made it home... thanks alll for the advices.

got the block tester from autozone, the blue liquid started bubbling even before i pump the air bulb, and kinda faded into transparent, not yellow...
should i still take it to a mechanic?
car still drives fine to work, i even had the a/c on today, temp stayed at middle, i keep the RPM under 2000.

****can someone edit the title to 2002 Deville, dang autocorrect.

It started bubbling? Antifreeze wasn't being pushed into it was it?

If the fluid wasn't contaminated, that's definitely a positive result.

i tried three times, the color is definitely not blue anymore.
also smell like exhaust, and when i open the surge tank cap, i see oily sludge under cap and around the hole
what a shame, only 90k miles.

i had some leftover blue liquid and decided to use it up, but on my fourth try, it stayed blue!?!?
i must have contaminated my first 3 trys. coolant was really bubbling up.
maybe it is not the HG after all???
i will try replacing the surge tank cap next,
or should i buy more blue liquid to test? or both?
maybe it is acting all weird because it is mostly water in there now.

It's more likely that most of the hydrocarbons were vented out of the system from all of the other tests. That's why it's recommended to perform the test right after an overheat.

Replace surge tank cap with a Delco Rc104, replace thermostat with a Delco 131-128. Inspect coolant cross over gaskets for leakage or sweating. When installing thermostat, make sure burp hole or jiggle vale faces 12 o'clock. Inspect purge line for coolant flow. Inspect hollow bolt for blockage....

Good luck
