when it is cold outside and i start my seville-i get this whirr-whirr-whirr-whirrrrrrrr-whirrrrrrr-whirrrrrr squeallll squeallll squeallll burrrrrr burrrrr burrrr then nothing-the noise appears to come from behind the far left portion of the dash-like underneath the dash by my left foot or knee. Seems to have a pattern to it-it whirrs for a while then a minute or so later it stops and i don't hear it again until i start the car cold again. It is not the heater blower-that sounds normal. Only does it when it is cold. I will be eternally impressed if someone can guess this one. My guess is the emergency brake release solenoid maybe? sounds like a bad fan bearing but i don't know what could be in that area that has a fan??? :hmm:

Re: 2001 Seville STS-whirring noise

See that little grille by the steering wheel? Put your ear there and you'll hear the nose. It's the aspirator fan and it's a cause of noise on these cars. Remove and replace. $20 from GM dealership. Only does it when it's cold outside though.

This post copied from May of 2010. It's one of many concerning the "aspirator".

"For starters, use a paperclip bent into a small hook to pull the little grille out of the dash, just left of the steering column. Inside is a small thermistor bead and further in is the module board with a small computer muffin fan on it. The fan either gets extremely dusty (it runs all the time) or it's frozen - the sleeve bearing dries out. Blow out the tunnel with a can of computer compressed air. Dust and crap will go down and out under the steering column."

"If you can't hear the fan whirring, the module comes out - stick your finger in the vent duct grommet in the end of the dash - the one that feeds the window vent in the door. Yank the end off the dash. Straight in there's a small hex head sheet metal screw. Remove it - you'll need a set of spring fingers or a magnet to pull it out the last thread or so. Fish out the module and disconnect it. If the fan can be turned, pull the seal tape off the center of the hub. There will be a bearing and E-clip in there. Put one drop of engine oil on the axle and spin the fan to work in the oil. Replace the seal tape or make a new one. Replace the sensor. Small fingers and magic words."

In regard to Ryanell's post ^^^ - Discussed a LOT in here. Several threads by iametarq on how to do it, and threads by me on how to remove the sensor/fan and lube the fan. It's only a small computer muffin fan with a sleeve bearing axle - one drop of synthetic engine oil does it - but you must remove the sensor module out the end of the dash. Simple job.

Google "cadillac forums cabin temperature sensor fan" or "cadillac forums cabin temperature aspirator".

Look through Cadillac Tech Tips - it's in there, along with tons of other how-to's.
