Hey guys/girls, so first things first im new here so my problem MIGHT have been solved already, it would be great to get the answer sooon though

Basicly, my problem is this. I have a 2001 DTS it started out running great but then it started over heating (needle passes center mark) and the car would start smoking..smelling alot like burning oil/coolant.
Got that fixed after changing the thermal stat and it started running normal again
However, the car still smokes, the smoke smells somewhat like coolant and the coolant level IS infact going down. Along with the coolant going down the oil slowly does too. :hmm:
And NOW the check engine light came on, as the car stops too, you can feel a slight misfire so though came in..we changed all 8 spark plugs with brand new bosh platnum 4's..yet we can still feel misfire and check engine light is still on :helpless:

Some Questions!!
First of all, is it normal for t he car to run with the temp. Right in the center?
Secondly, does anyone have ANY idea whats going on with my car and how i can fix, or reduce this problem?

THANKS , i know its alot to read but it will help me TONS

Look for an external leak (can be difficult to see because of road draft and evaporation removing the evidence). The water pump cartridge drive shaft seal is not an unusual failure.

Not related.

Keep your spark plug tools handy because ACDelco 41-987s are the only plugs you want in that engine.

You need to know which Diagnostic Trouble Codes are toggling the service engine light. Here's how to display your codes on your Driver Information Center (pay attention to codes with a P prefix):
http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums/cadillac-tech-tips/172511-how-pull-codes-98-04-sevilles.html

Expect to see a P0300 code which is not very helpful; you already know you have a misfire. There is a very recent thread in the Seville/Eldorado section that talks about carbon tracking and replacing the boots that connect the plug to the ignition coil assembly.

Yes.

Normal temp gauge position is 12:00.

However, the car still smokes, the smoke smells somewhat like coolant and the coolant level IS infact going down.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that sounds like a blown head gasket. Get a block test kit and check for exhaust gases in the surge tank. DO NOT waste your money on miracles in a bottle.

Make sure that your not overfilling the oil. Full is not the full mark.... fill it to no higher than the center of the XXXXXXXXXXX's on the dipstick. Any amount over the center of the XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX's will be quickly picked up by the PCV system and burned off. N*'s do consume some oil by design due to the cross hatched walls of the cylinders.

How much oil are you losing?

Before you spend another dime on your car... do what Ranger said and test it for a blown Head Gasket.

Im losing about 28 OZ every 2- 21/2 weeks..depending on how much its driving over the weekend

One thing, um what exactly is this "block test kit and check for exhaust gases in the surge tank"
love to know cuz i definitly want to try and see what exactly im dealing with here.

One more thing, i do know how to do the on board computer scan on the car, but when i do it it says no codes exept the one ABS, even when its misfiring?

Once again thank you for t he answeres looking folward to understanding this technological beast more lol

Another thing, i read that the Bosh platnum 2/4 are great for any car?

Just wondering why the ACDelco 41-987s are the only type and if its hurting the engine having bosh 4's

Sounds like Bosch marketing language to me.

They are the only plugs that experienced Northstar drivers use with any confidence. Your money plus your car equals your choice.

Some people fall for hype, others stick with what consistently provides good service.

2001-DTS, Please go up in the black bar ^^^ and study the entire Cadillac Technical Archive. Then go a tad lower and read the FAQ in the narrow blue bar. Then go down to Discussions: Engines; Technical Tips and read through all 9 pages of posts. Practically every question you may have is already answered in there.

Depending on your driving habits (all city, slowly) and if you overfill the oil (past the halfway mark on the dipstick), the engine can consume as much as a quart of oil in 600 miles. Some members get 1,500 miles, some get 3,000, some 4,500; depends on the engine, the driver, and the usage.

For some insight into year 2000+ Northstar parts and ignition systems, go up to Albums ^^^ and click on mine - the red 2002 STS.
