2000 DeVille: Blinking Engine Light/ Hesitation and Rough Idle

8708 Views 4 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  98eldo32v
As has been the case for me for a while, my wife steals my car to go to work because she likes it better than her van. Then I get a call that its acting up. Oil was low, filled it up. Check engine has been on for a while but now it was blinking. It has a kind of hesitation on take off almost like a sputter as if something isn't hitting right. Idle is rough as well. I'm usually working on this stuff myself but I usually send code issues to the shop. We are kind of broke now due to having a car we are trying to sell in the shop so I need this done asap and as cheap as possible. Any guidance on where I should look to get started?

You don't need to pay a shop to pull your codes. You can do it yourself through the dashboard.
Switch over to the Deville/Fleetwood FWD forum and read the sticky near the top on how to pull DTCs

check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes -
if you don't know how - go here and read the ENTIRE post -

http://www.cadillacforums.com/forum...ncluding-1985/138257-how-pull-codes-dtcs.html

if you have any codes - post them here -
ALONG WITH THEIR DEFINITIONS -

go here for the list of definitions -
http://www.cadillacfaq.com/faq/answers/dtccode.html

-----------------------------------

you WILL have a P0300 code - amongst others -

P0300 is a generic misfire code -
our on-board code readers will not display WHICH cylinder/cylinders is/are misfiring -
only that there IS a misfire -

take the car to any large auto parts store - they will check your codes for free -

P0301 is a misfire in cylinder #1 - P0302 is cylinder #2 - P0303 is #3 - etc -

once you discover WHICH cylinder is misfiring - diagnosis becomes much easier -

The check engine light could be any emissions related part that is monitored.
A flashing light means a misfire has been detected.

Serious misfire detected, you're putting your catalytic converter at risk of being ruined
