I have a 2000 DeVille with 215000 miles and parking brake will not engage when you put the shifter in park. Reverse and everything else is ok. I can set the emergency brake just fine and have to disengage it manually. I am just wondering what could be the problem, can anyone help? This my first caddy and I have heard they are very reliable.

We - and most cars - no longer have an "emergency brake".

The parking brake is the foot pedal, and if it won't disengage when the stick is shifted to N, D, or R then something's wrong - and the 2000 - 2003 FWD Northstar and some later cars use an electrical solenoid to trip the brake mechanism. There's a mechanical trip tab up inside the front of the pedal mechanism - it takes a good flashlight and contortions to find it.

The transmission P feature slips a metal pawl into the internal gear teeth to "lock" the transmission. If that won't work it's transmission repair time. Local Mom & Pop shop.

Our Cadillacs are no more reliable or untrustworthy than any other motor vehicle made. "Reliability" is a function of normal, preventive, and repair maintenance and mechanical checks.

That's interesting, my base 2004 is all manual, push down to set, push down to release and it just follows back up with your foot. I do have an idiot light, and occasionally, it does its job.
:giggle:
0 power assist/auto anything in 2004, per the owners manual.

My wife loves this brake, she says 'do you remember the Avis Buick in Philly? Late flight delayed?'
Ya, I neared meltdown status, had to go ask the attendant, apologize to the wife, etc.
I don't think that one said 'push to release'. hahahaha

I think it was about '04 when Cadillac went from auto release to manual.

If it won't set, I'd get under the dash and have a look see. Probably just needs some lube. Hit every pivot point you can see.

The foot pedal sets, but it does not show a bow around the p on the digital cluster and everthing else is fine. Could it be the parking brake relays in the fuse box #42 #43 #44? Also, i did recently change the shifter cable bolt because the old one broke. Could I have misaligned the shifter cable?

My uncle was using my grandpa's 99 Grand Prix (later my car) after dropping them off at the airport and said it took him half hour to figure out how to release the brake! Don't believe it said anything either.
