2.0T bad pistons - roll call & build dates

Could all you guys who have seen bad pistons or blown motors on the 2.0T please post to this thread along with your build date? It would be interesting to know if you are/were tuned, but I don't think that info necessarily needs to be shared (especially if you are concerned about "privacy").

There are a lot of assertions what GM did or did not do and when. Let's try to generate some facts! GM is not sharing their data yet, but I think this community is large enough where we can start compiling some data of our own.

Who wants to go first?

Looks like mine can be added to the list too. 3 weeks out of the dealer without even a chance to do anything to mine. Rough idle, service stabilitrack and traction control lights all on this morning. No real "event" to speak of, drove home normal from my sons baseball game last night. Everything was fine. Started up this morning with remote start and it was having the issue when I got in the car. 3170 miles when I started it this morning.

My guess is that, if the engine(s) have been "tuned" and are still supposedly under warranty then you'll never get a straight answer. "Tuning" and unauthorized modifications automatically voids the powertrain warranty, and the final call on that decision is pretty much the dealership's assessment. The written warranty is pretty specific on this, and a statement from a servicing tech to the service manager something like "This vehicle has been modified" is the nail in the coffin.

Don't really see anybody talking about bad pistons anymore, is it safe to say it may have been a bad batch or bad tunes? I honestly lost hope in my ATS when I had a diablo tune, inconsistency, knocking, diablo themselves even tried to fix the tune over email and it was still unreliable... I gave up and sold the tuner. With my new tuner everything has been perfect. Now that some are even getting 400whp, I am just wondering has anybody else had any issues?

I think the idea that the sky is falling and don't buy one because of the issue was way overblown.

I also think the hydro lock theory isn't likely because if it was I don't see how all of this liquid isn't accumulating and eventually killing many (if not all) of the 2.0T's. Basically if it happened to some cars with a few thousand miles I would expect most to eventually fail if the design wasn't change, and it wasn't.

Anyone tell me how the hydro lock only affects a tiny number of engines and once a rash of cars failed the number of incidents goes way down?

I doubt a compression issue would be intermittent and only show itself at 2/3k but to answer your question:

You can check for excessive blow-by in the crankcase by removing the oil filler cap.
If you don't want to do a compression test another way is to do a leak-down test where you are supplying the pressurized air and measuring how much escapes. It still requires a special tool though.

Nope, my Diablo Sport tune just came in the mail today actually. She didn't live long enough....
Now that sucks.

My pistons were replaced at ~6000 miles, was running a Diablo tune at the time for <1000 of those miles. Ran without the tune after the piston replacement and the rough idle symptoms returned after ~1,000 miles. Checked compression and #1 Piston was 100psi vs #2, #3 and #4 which were all at 120psi. Piston #1 was the same one that failed the first time.

I'm scheduled to take it back in again next week.
The number of reports of a 2nd failure in a short time makes me think the guys putting these things back together are still on engine building 101, or just throwing the old pistons back in there.

Good luck to you guys, and I hope you get a chance to enjoy your tunes in the future.
