2.0T bad pistons - roll call & build dates

Could all you guys who have seen bad pistons or blown motors on the 2.0T please post to this thread along with your build date? It would be interesting to know if you are/were tuned, but I don't think that info necessarily needs to be shared (especially if you are concerned about "privacy").

There are a lot of assertions what GM did or did not do and when. Let's try to generate some facts! GM is not sharing their data yet, but I think this community is large enough where we can start compiling some data of our own.

Who wants to go first?

Hey folks, dropped off car at dealer today, was informed of an engine tear down to occur as low compression was detected in a cylinder. I will get my build date, etc but in the meantime......did everyone with a bad piston get new parts? Or a new engine? I do not want a rebuilt motor on my ATS.

Thanks in advance.

Add me, I just dropped mine off yesterday, rough idle loss of power and CEL.(misfire pistion #3) 13 ATS 2.0t lux RWD auto. 49186miles
Compression test failed, they are tearing it down today to see if they will replace the parts or the engine. Is there anything out there that says they are replacing motors regardless? Just dont want to do this again.

Checking in with a 2014 Buick Regal Turbo, 2.0 LTG. 29k miles. Had the classic symptoms last week, CEL and also a blinking Stabilitrak light. Took it to the GM service center and had to have a piston replaced. Bulletin PI1178E. Took a few days, have it back now and everything is fine. Luckily it is still under warranty, but still unnerving. Hope it's not an issue I have to deal with down the line.

I think they are still sometimes replacing pistons and sometimes replacing the whole engine. There was someone complaining here recently that he wanted a new engine and they didn't agree. I also don't think there were any physical differences in the 2013 to 2015 engine blocks or pistons (hopefully manufacturing them correctly in later cars) so reality is they just need to manufacture the whole thing correctly.

I feel like we are in a period of time where a bunch of automakers (Ford, GM, BMW, VAG to some degree) got scared about cafe standards and high fuel cost of 5-7 years ago and forced a bunch of NA powertrain engineers to suddenly design turbo motors without a hole lot of experience or for the same budget as the NA motors. The results show that everyone screwed up and under estimated the budget it takes to do it right, and that the next gen of turbo motors would learn the lessons and get it right.

Makes my miss my 9000 Aero. Those guys knew what they were doing with similar power and fuel economy without needing DI.

Well, I was driving home today, and noticed a rough engine after starting my trip home, got all but 6 miles from home and the engine started shaking so badly it felt like it was going to blow up, the TCM and Stablitrak lights flicked on, and the Check engine light started flashing. Restarted it a few times and it's driveable again (with a rough idle), does this sound like a misfire or the pistons starting to go bad?

The interesting statistical analysis would be how many of these failed engines were tuned and how many not? I understand that many may not want to admit that their engine was tuned because of fear of warranty denial, etc. But it would be great to see the correlation.

HD: How about ford Mustang? It is the tuned one or all of them are prone to this issue?

2015 ats 2.0t RWD. Blew #3 piston, full warranty new engine from factory..... About 5,000 km, no build date as its being finished as we speak...

Was driving home thing shuttered bad, then tc light comes on and stabilitrack warning and check engine all on, started shifting like a bag of bolts(auto) really chunky and herd down shifting and going up.

Straight into dealership, as well as blown piston, nice chunk came off, a small piece of ceramic broke off the plug in the same bank right by the point and that was spit out somewhere after carving a top to bottom gouge in the cylinder wall...

Mechanic at dealership says they have seen about 10 of them come in all between 5,000 and 7,000 kilometres.

Run 93 octane full time, lives in sport mode....

Will see if it goes on the next engine, if so, just gonna pay the diff and go v swap...

Only thing I can make of the problem from research and some back yard n knowledge would be valve float, not super familiar with the problem, but appears it can cause things to hit and bind which causes blown Pistons in other engines.

Maybe GM cheaped out on the valve sprigs....

Hey all I'm new just got a 15' ATS 2.0T AWD Sedan popping through this thread it seems that the 2015s are very small minority of the reported cases with the majority being 13's and 14's , is the consensus the 15 is largely fixed with new tune and plugs ?

I'm anxious to get an after market tune but dont want to run into issues with the pistons and have GM pull powertrain warranty on me. currently the car has 13,000kms and is running awesome, the odd shutter at idle but nothing alarming to me, my old Cobalt SS/TC shook a lot more at idle and was totally fine.

gotcha, that aside though , are the 15's more "immune" if you will than previous years? I plan to have a good discussion with the service manager on the first visit and just chat with him, see where he lands on it all. Things like catch cans shouldn't hurt only help ... (if installed correctly don't want to open that "can" of worms though huge topic as i understand it).

Thanks for the reply oemtech!

There was a rash of blown motors mostly 13's, some early 14's and sprinkling of 15's IIRC.

Unless you have a really good relationship with your, SA and/or Srv Mgr... The less they know the better.

I spent months working on CC's and Intake tubes and my opinion is you only need a $5 check valve in the fresh air line that is attached to the intake tube. I made my own intake tube for about $75.

If you search for my posts you will find pages of discussion on CC's and the like.
