There are lot of complaints regarding this engine on ATC - pistons issues. The owners even made a list of the cars with changed engine: http://www.cadillacforums.com/forum...performance-forum/613529-2-0t-bad-pistons-roll-call.html#/topics/613529?page=55

What about the CTS with 2.0T? Is the risk of a piston issue the same as with ATS? It looks very strange to pay a lot of money and then get stuck on the road with a subseqient engine replacement...

I'm considering a purchase of 2015 CTS with 2.0T on the Russian market (the only engine option available). But I would like to buy a truly reliable car (like my current Saab 9-3 MY2006 with 130k miles without any serious issues).

Responses from the owners are especially appreciatied. thanks.

i'm on my third car in a row with this engine....totally problem free... there's nothing to worry about with this motor

my BMW owning friend, on the other hand, has lost 2 diesel engines in the same time frame....MY GT3 RS owning friend is on engine number 4 for the same car...3 in the last 9 months

my point is, engine problems are not just a 4 banger thing, and FUD surrounding the 2.0T is undeserved...Caddy has a great motor on their hands

Great freaking engine!!!

I swear this 2.0L turbo smokes my previous Cadillac CTS coupe with 3.6 V-6 RWD and 6-speed manual! My current CTS honestly feels twice as powerful and the extremely broad torque range of this engine is unmatched in my opinion. The best way to explain it would be, an awesome rush of power from 1000-6000RPM with no lag or dead spots.

you are not imagining this ... According to www.zeroto60times.com

2nd Gen CTS 3.6 Coupe 0-60: 6.3 (Automatic)
3rd Gen CTS 2.0T 0-60: 6.2

a couple things to note, that make this more impressive IMO...

  • the manual gen2 is slower to 60 than the automatic
  • this is the 6 speed gen3 car, the newer 8 speed cars do 0-60: 5.8
  • for a larger car gen3 is still lighter than the smaller gen2 (about 100 lbs in this case)
  • torque is what accelerates a car and gen3 has 295 ft-lbs vs gen2 273 ft-lbs
  • the 3.6DI in gen2 replaced the northstar V8, the 2.0T is just about dead even with the northstars power in both HP and Torque

that is why your current car is so quick

I go back to my previous comments but in totality. There are those who are just plain anti-4-banger in a Cadillac, no matter what, and, typically, their minds won't be changed. So they'll come up with all kinds of supposed "proof" about how it's a crappy engine. And, that's fine, to each their own. If you just can't get past the idea of having a 4-cyl engine in a Caddy, then simply don't buy one. There are other options. As pointed out here by someone else, I suspect (IMO only) that a good amount of supposed 4-cyl (or any engine for that matter) problems are the result of modifications done after the fact, be it after market tunes or whatever. Frankly, I'd never spend this kind of money on a new or late model car like this then start screwing with it...but that's just me. Finally, there are just plain bad engines of all types out there, call them lemons. Like everyone else, you hope that the particular car you pick doesn't have one of them in it. Do your research, go with your gut, then move forward.

In your case I would buy a car that you are able to repair. I would not consider any american car as truly reliable, but of course that is my opinion. Any vehicle produced today SHOULD be able to reach 130,000K without any MAJOR problems. If service and parts for your Caddy are readily available then buy the car...as long as you have the CHANGED ENGINE.

PS I have the V6 and I am one of those people that would never own a caddy with a 4 banger, but there are plenty of good people on this site that own these cars that love them and would not steer you in the wrong direction with your purchase.

Do you think it is about CTS? 130k? :)
Why changed engine? As stated above this was a problem of ATS, but not CTS.

Service of Cadillac in Russia is a challenge. But after Saab I don't want to buy mass-market :)

The only problem I'm aware of is only an issue in cold climates. As in weather that gets down to roughly -20 Celsius or colder. My car was in the shop roughly a dozen times last winter due to fairly large amounts of gas getting dumped into the crankcase. Them being unable to solve the issue is why I recently decided to move from a 2017 ATS 2.0T to my CTS 3.6 (no available ATS with a 3.6 in my area).

Just to be clear, I don't think it's an issue with the car you're looking at as it's a 2015. I was more or less just stating that it wasn't specific to the ATS as mentioned. My bigger concern for you with that car would be your location and the weather. Are you actually located in Russia? If so, are you in an area that gets down to -30 to -40 Celsius on a regular basis in the winter?

There are in total something like 200 CTSs sold in Russia :) All the MYs. Therefore not so many to choose from. Currently i'm thinking about MY2015 standard version assembled in Russia (it differs from the standard in the US as I understand: natural leather, ventilated seats, BOSE 13 speakers), but also plan to check one MY2013 (assembled in the US) because it's fully equipped. But possibly better to have a standard one but with a fresher year and low mileage plus less risk with the engine... https://auto.ru/cars/used/sale/cadillac/cts/1073213470-f55b8/

Yes, i'm from the Moscow area. It's OK to have -20-30 in the winter. Lower temperatures - it's about Siberia :)) It makes a problem? I'm a bit concerned about RWD. Never had it.

It's just the issue I mentioned earlier. GM's 2.0T doesn't seem to like extended extreme cold weather or weather changing from extreme cold to more mild temperatures day to day. They can dump relatively large amounts of fuel into the crankcase which can cause premature wear and damage to your engine. I know I experienced the issue and read of several others who did as well, but I honestly don't know if it only happens on some of the 2.0Ts. There isn't a large amount of information about the issue which could come down to it not effecting a large number of vehicles or it could just be that not a lot of people drive these cars in areas as cold as where we live. It's definitely not as big or as common an issue as the pistons in the earlier models, but it is still something that you might experience.

Hi guys,

I have a question. The CTS i'm interested in has an unsual location of the license plate - on the grille instead of below the grille as on other CTSs. This makes the space below the grille completely open - you can see clearly the radiator. This means that the dust, snow, ice, etc will go directly inside - to the radiator. Is it a normal thing? I googled and found on internet that such placement of the license plate happens.

Please, advise, how risky it can be to buy such a car.
