1999 Cadillac DeVille Concours, The spring next to front driver side tire is broken. Strut coil spring maybe? I'm finding a lot of conversion kits not any direct replacement. Can some one with knowledge of what it takes to repair/upgrade part and what is the best option please share, Thanks Hugh

OK - if the spring is broken it obviously needs to be replaced -
the labor/procedure will be the same - regardless of the repair method you choose -

replacing the spring requires the strut assembly to be removed from the car -

the strut assembly must be disassembled -

the broken spring replaced with a new spring -

re-assemble the strut assembly -

re-install the strut assembly -

align the front end -

--------------------------------

there are some questions that must be answered -
and some choices you must make -

1) are the struts still fully functional -
OR are they weak and should be replaced -

are the other components of the strut assembly in good working condition -
OR are they weak/worn and should be replaced -

if the strut assembly is still good - you can just replace the spring -
ACDelco 45H0363 - $68 - for the pair - with free shipping -

HOWEVER - springs are sold in PAIRS - and should be replaced in pairs as well -
especially 20 year old springs -
meaning even though the other spring is not broken - it should be replaced -

-----------------

there are a few other components in a strut assembly -
upper bearing - upper mount - spring idolators - bellows - bump stop - etc -

if ANY of these parts aren't PERFECT - now is the time to replace them -
remember - the labor is the same to re-assemble the strut assembly using the old/original parts - or brand new parts -

-----------------

if you are going to keep the car "forever" -
I recommend replacing everything with new parts -
the ACDelco springs I listed above -
along with the MONROE 900111 and MONROE 900112 strut kits -

total for parts $310 -
remember - this does not include any labor and does not include the alignment -
that might be another $200 to $300 -

----------------------------------

if you are NOT planning on keeping the car much longer -
the absolute cheapest way would be to find/buy good used strut -
probably $50 to $100 for the part - another $50 to $100 for labor - plus the alignment -
