My father just bought a really nice '97 SLS and I went to pick it up for him about 2 hours away. When I picked it up I reset the info center avg mpg. I ran the speed limit (65 mph) on the way home with about 3 or 4 WOT's (which belched out a tremendous amount of black soot). After about an hour I checked it and it said I was getting 31.5 mpg! Is that possible? This was on the interstate (I-85 between Greenville, SC and Charlotte, NC) Roads had plenty of rolling hills, not flat by any means. This makes me question the fuel use calculator... Dad has not driven it since so I have not been able to follow up. Just wanted to be able to compare with others.
1997 Seville SLS... Could this gas mileage really be true?

The PCM and DIC calculate both long term (most accurate - long term) and instantaneous (fun to watch but useless) by keeping track of fuel flow and injector pulse timing as compared to indicated transmission output shaft (wheel) speed - and that's the simple explanation: there's a lot more to it than that.
