Hi, I want to flush my coolant and replace the thermostat in my 97 Deville. I've read in past threads that I should use a Delco thermostat. Is it really critical to use a Delco part or can I use a stant product instead. GM wants an arm an a leg for their part. Thank you.

Re: 1997 Deville therostat

Nothing wrong with Stant or Gates - they're probably the original GM suppliers anyway.

Your thermostat is set to begin opening at 188 and fully open at 206.

Test your present one in a saucepan of water, using a candy thermometer. Probably nothing wrong with it.

Please study the sticky posts on the main threads page of Engines, Northstar. The ones on cooling systems, fans, and gauges. Have fun filling and settling down the system ..........

Make sure to put the jiggler valve on the thermostat straight up (like my technical term LOL). Stick to name brand and it'll be fine. Might as well clean the hollow bolt that is above the cover while you are there. It gets restricted over the years and can cause issues purging the system of air.

Thanks for the replies, I'm sure there's nothing wrong with the thermostat. The motor is running fine. Just want to freshen things up because the car sat for about 2 years. I think the thermostat was changed in 2007. Thank you.
