I own this:bighead: car for about 3 months now and i'm having a problem with the non-Bose Radio shutting off every now and then. If you have the windows open and the radio's volume up a bit, it sometimes shut off. At times it comes back on by itself but most of the time you have to shut the engine off and restart. I thought it was a radio problem but it wasn't.

Has anyone faced this before? I'm really getting upset with this. Any help will be appreciated.

Get yourself this kit that converts to a 1din, get a good aftermarket deck and dump the stock junk. You might want to invest in some quality component speakers for the front while you are at it and a nice sub for the back.

The car was built in Germany along side the Omega (which has a totally different sound system) and when I lived in Europe I did own an Omega.
Now I have this '97 "Cadillac Catera" in which the radio in no way communicates with any of the cars computers.

So you see, there are a ton of options out there as far as sound is concerned and it is quite safe to remove the stock system in favour of something good.

found this on page 31...Hmmm....thought I'd bump this...don't have my manuals with me but this looks like the problem I am trying to find. As I know its not the radio itself but something else shutting off the power to the radio....wonder if this part is still $65?? Cheaper than a new head unit! And I got other things to spend money on (i.e. a good sound system for my custom TR7) so I ain't completely motivated to hide a problem with a new stereo.

When you had your new deck installed, did you install or did circuit city. Because i had circuit city install mine, and while i didn't have the shutting off on the stock radio, i now do with my new cd deck. So im just getting completely aggrivated with the fact that i can't even turn the music up to a decent level w/o it shutting off. Especially when i spent 400 bucks for the whole deal. So i was just wondering if you installed or circuit city did. I'm thinking that perhaps that they did all by following the books and not rigging it up so that it won't have this problem, so maybe if i could take the cd player out and install it myself, i may not have problem. Ya or Na?

1st we have to figure out why its cutting out. what type of cd player (alpine pioneer jvc) of cd player is it and what model (cda-9807). Secondly when the radio shuts down and comes back on does it save all the settings (i.e. radio stations bass treb and mid setting etc etc etc) or does it erase them and you have to reprogram them. Finally what kind of harness did they use to connect everything together. If its just a plug there MAY be your problem. Due to obd-2 our cars have the radio tied in to the computer. if they used a plug with an interface like i have some times the computer does not regonize it on START UP and you have to shut off the key and re-engage the engine mine even does this, however ive never had it shut down on me while im driving. finally about how hot is it when it shuts down? does it eject the cd its playing when it shuts down? if so how hot is that cd? way too hot or just its been playing for awhile so its hot?

See my post "radio shuts off with loud volume". You may have installed a unit with just a little more load than the stock unit and have uncovered another existing problem. Also check and see if your trunk and fuel door release works after the CD player has shut off. Finally, see if it comes back when you push the remote trunk and fuel door buttons (that brings another circuit in parallel with the head unt and water pump circuit effectively fooling the multifunction module that the load has dropped). If those functions work and malfunction as above, and there is nothing wrong with your head unit otherwise, take a DMM to the heater water auxiliary pump under the overflow tank and measure for 5 ohms, check the connection, and see if it is working with the key ON and after the key is turned OFF during the twilight countdown.

I have the same problem on a non-Bose 1997 catera. I am thinking of swaping out the head unit, some of the speakers and adding and amplifier and maybe a sub. Is the CD changer compatible with aftermarket head units? Do I still need to change the multifunction module to prevent it from cutting off?
Thanks

Guys, I finally found the multifunction module on my green 97 Cat. Cleaned it up on the inside, we'll see how it acts tomorrow. Then I went to "play" with my black one. What I found was no module at all! Instead, there was an open female connector, that looked like two relay connectors side by side  Any ideas?
Thanks. You guys are great :beavis:
