Hi everyone..... so I picked a 96 ETC and it is overheating.... checked the purge tube and it was partially plugged (poor flow) .... i cleared it, and now my question, it is still overheating , which direction should the flow be on the purge line. is is coming from the reservoir to the throttle body or vice versa.
It seems to be cavitating. previous owner said he changed the pump a couple years ago and it has sat for a year and a half. thought it was the thermostat and put in a new one.
I pulled the hose from the reservoir and nothing came from the throttle body side.

thanks in advance for your help.

the purge line is the only way to eliminate trapped air from the cooling system -

the coolant flows FROM the thermostat housing TO the serge tank -
there should be a constant - gentle flow of coolant into the serge tank -

it might NOT just be the hose -
the hollow bolt gets clogged -
the BEST solution is to remove the hollow bolt and rod it out by hand with an appropriate size drill bit -
the DOWN n DIRTY method is to use a straightened out metal coat hanger -
and ram it into the hollow bolt - several inches - to break up the clog -

Don't worry about flow volume. Flow volume will increase with RPM. If it flows, it's OK. Time for a block test.

that was my first impression too - BUT - I re-read this part -
which direction should the flow be on the purge line.
is is coming from the reservoir to the throttle body or vice versa.

to me - that kinda says there is no flow -

But in post #1 he said "poor flow", and that he cleaned it, and it is still overheating. I'm thinking HG. Especially since it is a '96. That's why I suggested a block test. Might as well rule out the worst case first, before chasing a ghost.

with it running , and the temp guage over half way there is nothing coming from the throttle body side at all. looking at it its a tube with a 90 in it coming up from the throttle body. I am not seeing a bolt at all..... unless previous owner has something hooked up wrong. has anyone had to pull the TB to clean the port ? its birthday is 7/95 if that makes it more of a 95 ?????? i can a pic tomorrow and post.

the poor flow was with the tube pulled and cleaning it out .... sprayed cleaner in it and barely ran out the end. rodded it out and now the tube is good.

for a short time it ran without overheating .... then the hose on the throttle body ( which was a hard composite now) split and started spraying after a 20 minute drive. this when the air gor introduced by changing that hose out....... now i cant get it to flow right to cool off. reading prior posts went with the check the purge tube answer.... and Bobs your uncle , no flow ......

the early Northstar motors ran the PURGE LINE all over the place -
through the TB - sometimes down through the alternator before finally dumping into the SERGE TANK -

I recommend re-routing the PURGE LINE directly from the hollow bolt to the serge tank -
use the correct diameter reinforced rubber fuel line -

Yep - the unnecessary coolant heated throttlebody caused all sorts of overheat problems due to purge line clogs so it was dropped after less than 2 years.

As posted, completely bypass the TB circuit and run a single length of reinforced rubber fuel hose directly from the hollow bolt/nipple to the surge tank fitting.

Ahhh ... okay. thank you guys... so rod out the hollow bolt and be sure it has flow... and I should be good ... ... If I pull that bolt out will there be blockage in the throttle body as well. or that housing to be more accurate, or should it be confined to the hollow bolt ?

Usually confined to the hollow bolt and due to use of the long-discontinued sealant tablets. DO NOT pour magic potions or powders into a Northstar cooling system.

Well thank you , thank you... pulled it , cleaned it put it back together... no overheat. drove around for 10 minutes and it started getting a little hotter.... Ill top off the coolant after its cold and i think thats got it.
I left the system in place.... all cleaned out now . once im 100% sure its done I will throw in a new radiator.....

Still overheating....it seems like the thermostat isnt opening when it should , and it doesnt seem to flow well. the purge line flows fine... i did a block test... stays blue...
this is the second thermostat, and water pump was replaced 2 years ago... the gauge goes up right away.....after running 10 minutes it climbs to the 1st line past . then eventually to the 2nd line...... the fans are working.....
my 2000 only goes to the halfway mark ever.......
I dont know whats going on with this thing...... maybe ill put another pump in.

** 1st line past halfway mark....
