How big of a job is it on these cars? Can it be done by a fairly skilled DIYer? Does the subframe need to be lowered?

Did you ever get an answer? Is it elsewhere on this forum or somewhere on the internet? I am about to attempt it and all I have is the Haynes manual, a half page on steering gear removal.

It's a fairly straight-forward job, just take your time jacking up and supporting the car.
The rear end of the sub-frame DOES have to be lowered about 3".

Make sure everything is well supported.

Give all those who are around a heads up of the cursing to come from under the car.

Having a couple floor jacks will make things easier.
Line wrenches will speed the process up a bit. PB blast all the Rack mounting bolts a couple hours in advance.
And don't forget to disconnect the steering column before you lower the frame.
