1989 Sedan De Ville aftermarket rims

i went to put on some 17 inch rims on my front wheels and
the lugs fit perfect when the guy at the shop tried to put on
the center cap the hub nut that keeps the factory hub cap
screwed on got in the way. the guy told me to cut some of the
hub nut off is this the only way to fix this problem
