Thanks for the heartfelt story. We of the forum share many, myself included. The one big problem I can see with a 1996 Lincoln Continental is that you wiill need a Tech2 device to read any stored computer codes. The V6 did not have a good reputation for longevity and suffered many the same problems as the NorthStar resulting from improper maintenance. All I can say now is be careful, and reconsider a different Cadillac in your price range.

I second what 91TexasSeville said, Lincoln Continentals are one of the more unreliable cars out there. They're just too complicated for their own good. Not just the engine but the air suspension and computers especially. And parts are extremely expensive. I think that's a bad move, and would also recommend a Cadillac over the Linc.

What about a late 80's early 90's Deville? Ones with the 4.9 engine are known to fair very well, and before 94 they really didn't have as many computers either. I think your 86 experience was atypical, and the fact that you were getting 12-14 mpg was a sign that your engine was already having problems. You should be getting high teens at least, and probably low 20's if you do a lot of highway. It's almost as good as the Northstar on gas.

Keep us appraised.

Don't Get Down On Yourself Too Much .we've All Been There & Done That. Get Yourself A Reliable Local Garage & Stay Away From The Dealers If You Can. They're Way Too Expensive. Have You Made Sure Your Water Pump Wasn't Shot & Causing The Overheating Problem. Or You Might Have A Slight Leak In A Hose. Or Your Thermostat Might Be Sticking Shut. Check Out All Possibilities Before Junking It. Dealer Is Probably Going To Sell You That Lincoln For A Arm & A Leg Also. How Hot Did You Get It When It Overheated? Is The Engine Making Any Weird Noises Or Puffing Whiteish Smoke. Check Your Hoses & Make Sure They're Not Old. If Hoses Get Too Old They've Been Known To Collapse At Higher Temps & Thus Creating Overheating. Check Out All Possibilities Before Junking It. Good Luck

...ok, I'm not saying this is the problem, but maybe consider checking it out.
my girlfriend has a 90 integra, the car would overheat ALL the time, and one day, it overheated too much, and cracked the rad.. so we bought a new rad, and it was my first time installing a rad, so I didnt know if there were any special things I was supposed to do... well, needless to say, we drove about 100km's and bam! engine temp shot up again.. and well, cracked the new rad also.. so we towed it home, and then got another rad, and got my dad to install it, and he said, when you fill it with antifreeze, you are supposed to have the engine running. so you dont get any airbubbles in the system, causing it to overheat, in which it was constantly doing. Now the car temp hasnt gone over half way... so perhaps the dealer might not have had the car running while putting in the new antifreeze ? just a thought.

gosh, the Ford 3.8 is a POS engine, I would never get a car with that..... the 3.0 OTOH is pretty solid.

V8 dual exhaust and leather?

could either be a Mark VIII or a Town Car..... not a Continental.... but yeah, air suspension on those is a big issue... but I like them atleast...

na man, he is right.

A While back I saw a new continental like he is talking about in the junkyard. It seems to me Ford produced aFWD 4.6 V8 fora short period of time for the Continental. And it was a 32 valve as well.

Not sure if you remember your Ford history (I am partial to GM but I'm interested in all makes), the original 4.6 was planned to be a FWD to save wieght in all if the companies cars (they always got worse fuel mileage than the competition). It looks to me they didn't completely scrap the idea. I never rode in one but I bet it's a pretty quick car. And if the transverse 4.6 is even half as reliable as the regular ones in 2 of my buddies Grand Marquis, your in a for a treat.
