All,

I could use your help on this one. The only little telltale light that I have "light up" when I turn the key to "On" - right before starting the car - is the "GEN" light. All the other little telltale lights for "Oil", "Water Temp", "Brakes", etc don't light up at all.

I would've expected all the various telltale lights to "light up" when the key is in the "On" position or right after the car starts so that I can be assured that the actual telltale light bulb isn't burned out.

Perhaps all these are burned out? What is supposed to happen on a 1969 DeVille? According to the owner's manual I just purchased for it, I think some of them are supposed to light up in the "On" position or right after the car starts.

Can someone walk me through the start-up process for a 1969 and describe what I should experience in the instrument panel?

Thanks!

First, when you turn the key to ignition position, only "oil" is on. When you pull the key to crank the starter "brakes" and "engine temp" are on too, until engine starts. As this is not my car (53 miles away from home) I´ll check mine to be completely sure next sunday. This one have no "gen" light on:hmm:

Yesterday I could check it on my '69: When key is in ignition position "oil" and "gen" are on. When you pull the key to start "brakes" and "engine temp" also turns on. (so the "gen" bulb in the car in the pics doesn´t work)

When the engine is running no light is on unless there is a problem you should check in the manual.

1969 is the first year for the key-in-the-ignition reminder buzzer. Sometimes the ignition cylinder is really worn and loose, and the key doesn't consistently make contact with the switch to trip the buzzer. With the door open and the car not running, push the ignition key into the ignition lock cylinder as far as you can and maybe jiggle it a bit. Unless the buzzer element is burned out, you should get a buzzing noise.

Thanks for the info. I can't hear any buzzer in my '69. Sometimes, the upper engine temp. red light is on when the key is in and ignition off. I´ll try to push the ignition key but probably the buzzer is burned out or disconnected (like some other elements in my car).:suspect:

funny thing (kinda annoying thing really...) is that sometimes when I take my key out the temp light comes on and the buzzing noise happens. very annoying. I have to jiggle the ignition cylinder until it stops. haha.
