I have a 1964 series 62 Coupe with the 429 engine. About a month ago my oil pump failed while driving. The oil light came on and I had an loss of power. I immediately shut the it down and coasted to the side of the road, and called a tow truck.

Well fast forward a month and I had the oil pump rebuilt. Now my engine has a lot of blow by coming from where the oil cap is. I pulled the cap it's definitely coming from there. Also has it coming from the tailpipes as well. This smoke is white in color. It also idles really rough and will stall. The shop who did the oil pump is telling me that my compression rings and or valves/valve seals are shot and a rebuild is in order.

They want approximately $3,200 to remove and tear down the engine to confirm this. My questions are is it possible to have damaged these things in that short of time with no oil pressure? It wasn't doing this before the oil pump failed. Also is there anyway to find out of it is indeed the compression rings and or valves and valve seals with out pulling the engine and tearing it down?

Does the engine need to pulled to do these repairs? I don't hear any knocks or chunks just what sounds like a miss if you will. Thanks for any help guys.

Re: 1964 series 62 Coupe owner need some help please.

Good Mechanics are like a good wife. You gotta trust them or they are not worth bothering with. You can do a wet and a dry compression check to see if the rings are bad. Valves/heads can be rebuilt without pulling the motor, but in my humble opinion, if you do the heads, you might as well do the rings too. because once you do the heads and the valves are good, if the rings are old, the new head will just suck the oil right past the rings. The major cost of the rebuild is pulling the motor and replacing it. You can do this. Just rent a cherry picker for the weekend and yank the motor. take it to the machine shop and have them do the needful, and put it back in yourself. You can probably get it done for half the price. When I had a guy do mine, my biggest complaint was not the money, but the time it took. I hate to wait.

When you lose oil pressure you only have a loss of power for a few seconds before everything gets scored and ruined. Once in a while I still see used 429's on craigslist. I don't know the best course of action for you but $3200 to remove and tear down an engine is pretty steep in my area. I wonder how much more they would charge to rebuild it or if they even have the capability to rebuild an engine properly. You don't want just new rings in honed out cylinders for thousands of dollars. If a used engine turned up I would shop for a shop that could replace it a little cheaper. Or gather a few friends and do it yourself over a weekend.
