I changed my 08 CTS 3.6 DI license plate lights about 4 months ago. One of the lights immediately flickered and went out while the other worked. Being lazy I kept it like that for a month. I finally swapped the one that went out with the other (traded places) and it came back on and worked fine for about a week and then went out.

Is anyone else noticing this issue? autolumination has been nice enough to ask me to send them back so they could test however it is going to come up as working. I feel it has something to do with the lighting. I put bright white "normal" 194's back in and it works fine.

I feel your pain. I tried the LED experiment twice with the license plate lights with a set from Hoen and Auto Illumination. Both times the left LED light began to flicker and was effectively useless. This was the response from Hoen when I sent them an email about my flickering light:

"We are finding the CTS does not work with the LED's. All will go
well then either one side will not ignite or the car cuts power and only a
few LED's will ignite after a month or two.

The only option is installing resistors on the car - which frankly I dont
recommend - however it does fix the flickering and or partial ignition."

I have since put the original lights back in and have not had an issue since. Hope this helps.

Mike

I've been running a set of 194 LEDs from a local autoparts store for months now without any issue at all. I think I paid $10 for the 2 LED bulbs. I can't remember the brand name, but they were just a cheap set with 3 individual LEDs per "peanut bulb".

I bought a set of 194 "max blue" or some crap like that from Autozone. I do not think mine are LED's, however they do not emit much light. I will look towards your recommendation.

Just letting you know... Same problem here!

I bought some inexpensive LEDs of ebay for the license plate. They are now much dimmer and one is flickering.

I also installed them in my 2004 CTS, in the triangle next to the headlight. I hope those don't go... those are VERY hard to reach!!

dont have my manual :( i have an 05 CTS. anyone?
Why are you on the "2nd Generation" forum if you own an '05? I'd ask your question (or better yet, do a search) on the "1st Generation" forum.

Just for grins, I had no trouble searching for the '08 and '09 owner's manuals on this forum ... Maybe the '05 CTS is similar to the '08-'10's. If so:
* Go here for the '08. For license plate bulb change, page 5-56.
* Go here for the '09. For license plate bulb change, page 5-60.

You're welcome. :)

Roger G ... and your source is??? Some night photos would be appreciated, too. Thanks in advance.
The car is very dirty right now (we just had snow again last night) and I really don't want to take pics from that :annoyed:

The LEDs I use were sitting around in my garage and I will order longer ones soon as these are not bright enough for my gusto. The ones I used are the same like these on ebay:
Small FLux LEDs

I will get those soon:
25 SMD LED T10

I had these on another car and worked very well. Just make sure that you use a little bit of silicone glue (stays flexible and can be removed) as due to vibration and the size of the bulb it may come loose or doesn't make contact very well.

I used SMD's in my 08 with no problems or flickering. I had every 194 bulb converted. Now that I have an '10, I have ordered SMD's for the whole car with different numbers depending on location. To do the whole car was $55. As soon as they get here I'll let you know if this seller is trustworthy.
