'19 XT5: Sunroof issue

Bought my 2019 XT5 Premium in Feb 2019. Last week in March 2024 both the sunroof and sunshade stopped working at the same time. No warning and both went completely unresponsive. Luckily both were in the closed position. I had the Dealer diagnose ($250 fee) and he said both motors were shot. No explanation of how it happened. The estimate is $1,700 and I'm past the warranty expiration date. Weird that the sunroof and sunshade motors are independent but both "went" at the same time. Dealer said if one was shot it might have tripped the other, but no better answer than that.

Can anyone help with a few questions?

Have you had this issue?

What do you think cost to repair shoud be?

If I don't repair is there a way to open and close the sunshade manually as needed?

Thanks all!

I haven't had either the sunroof or the sunshade stop working on either our CT6 or our XT5, but both have had numerous issues with the sunshade not retracting properly, and with squeaks and rattles. We've had both worked on several times under warranty and they were always expensive repairs (covered free because of warranty), probably because of the labor involved in dropping the headliner to get to any part of the assembly.

Based on the cost of your estimate, you might consider having an independent shop look at it. I'd find it very unlikely that both motors failed at the same time.

That's Good Reason to never open them, that way they never quit when open. That said, in the past 33 year have had 5 cars with Sun Roofs, and they have not given trouble, except for Squeaks and Rattles, but I really don't open them much, as I prefer not having the Sun heating the top of my Head, They do get opened the last hour or 2 before Sunset, when the Sun can't shine directly in. The Shade is always closed as well, except when the roof is open, as the Glass offers little protection from the Sun's Heat

That’s so odd. Mine did the same thing last week. We noticed the vehicle had some moisture in it so we checked the sunroof. Totally dead. I have an appointment next week. I bought it 4 years ago in June. It has 33,000 miles on it. I’ve had 3 cadillacs now nd I really love them but things always seem to start happening right after the 4 years. ☹

My wife’s Cadillac XT5 sunshade stop working then one day she gets in car and the sunroof is completely opened all the way by itself while the car shut off, I tried this and it didn’t work for me, when I got in car next day I smelt smoke so I located sunshade and sunroof motors (Thanks to Autozone chat for location of them) they are under headliner past sunroof and passed back seats. I removed them both and the Boards were both burnt out. When I took apart sunshade motor the plastic gear was worn out but I was able to use that gear to Manually close my sunroof before the rain came. Looks like I will be ordering 2 New Motors but need to see if they have to be calibrated after install cause if that’s the case I guess I will go to dealer ship
