I have periodically had this message pop up on my message center dashboard. I think that it is related to weather/rain/carwash ( I think I had seen this on the forum last year).

I also occasionally have the check engine light come on as well. For example, last Tuesday the Steering Assist message came on, then after several stops and starts, the check engine light came on and both stayed on until Friday. Then they both disappeared(turned off). On Saturday evening (yes, it rained), the Steering Assist Reduced message returned.

I have an appointment scheduled for Monday but would like to go to it armed with more knowledge than I currently have. All information would be appreciated. Last January, I had several messages constantly popping up on the dashboard, and the dealer did a software update, which seemed to help.

Car is a 2017 - powertrain warranty is still valid through Feb. 2024 or 110000Km (I'm at just over 90K)
I asked the service person about warranty coverage but she didn't think it was covered - said she'd bring it up with a service manager (who is not available today). So - in anticipation of being told no - I did bring it up with Cadillac directly - they said they'd check with the dealership.
Kind of think I'm out of luck so I'll just pay the tab when it is done and see if there is any way to swing a courtesy adjustment after the fact (kind of need the car back :) )

Most people have said the thermostat fix is under powertrain from their dealers, so your dealer probably pushed GM for powertrain coverage.

Max
Actually - I had called Cadillac customer service earlier in the day - they looked it up and told me that it is not covered. Someone up thread posted an extract from the warranty manual and it wasn't really clear to me - something along the lines of cooling system coverage starts at the water pump and ends at the thermostat assembly (wasn't clear to me what "at" meant - does it include the assembly)

Should be completely safe. We drove ours for a day or two until I took it into the dealer, and I haven't read of anyone here having any additional issues crop up after driving until they could get it fixed. (There may be people still driving with that condition!) :)

Mzbk21….Not safe! I had a major accident when my steering went out. Couldn’t get it under control, my vehicle left the highway, crossed over into median and hit embankment, almost ended up on other side of the Hwy with oncoming traffic. My passenger and I suffered injuries/ broken bones, fractured ribs. The only thing that saved us was hitting that embankment to slow the car down. All airbags deployed including knee bags. Road conditions were good, weather was clear, light traffic, No distractions. Just small chat with my passenger when the accident happened. Thankfully no other cars were hit and we didn’t get hit. Could have lost our lives that day. That was 3 weeks ago today and I’m still having severe back pain. Cadillac XT5 Premium Luxury AWD… My 4th and last Cadillac! Also previously owned 2008 Saturn Vue (another GM product). Bought it brand new…A/C quit working one day and the suddenly died while traveling on a two lane road. Less than 70K miles on it.

That's a horrible thing to experience! Steering locking up or failing is not at all the same event as "steering assist reduced," though.

At highway speeds there is almost zero assist on the steering; you wouldn't even notice a reduction. The way you'd feel steering assist reduced would be when you noticed it took a little more effort to turn the wheel during a low-speed maneuver in a parking lot. The steering still works fine, but you wouldn't be cranking the wheel with one finger.

It sounds like you had some sort of mechanical failure, and I hope they find the cause and you're compensated for what you went through.

Car had to be towed on a flatbed and the repair shop wouldn’t accept it. It was that bad! It’s sitting in my driveway now. Insurance adjuster finally came to inspect last week and said the same thing. This one is terrible he said. Major front end…totally demolished underneath and the frame is bent. I think the axle is broken too.

Filed a formal complaint with GM and asked for a vehicle inspection. They are finally sending someone out next week to retrieve black box data.
I think it needs to go on a lift so they can check underneath as well.

I’m just devastated behind all this and may end up getting an attorney because something malfunctioned and that’s for sure. Just don’t know what else to do or who to call at this point.

That was a traumatic experience. So glad to see you are able to share with us all of the detail. Sounds as if you have taken the right steps to find the cause. Please report your findings.

Car is completely dead. No way to get codes which is why I had it towed to a repair shop first, but they wouldn’t accept it.

Called the dealership in Ridgeland Ms and asked if they could do it and they said no because it had to go to the body shop and they don’t have a body shop.

Called another dealership in Hattiesburg MS and they said no they couldn’t get codes using a scanner until they fixed all the airbags and got the car in driveable condition first??

So the car is just sitting in my driveway looking ugly because I refused to let my insurance company haul it to CoPart until GM got a good look at it. Someone from the ESIS team contacted me and they stated they would share the EDR info with me. Let’s just hope they honor their word and I hope I can find out what caused the accident.

Great thread everyone I am experiencing the exact same conditions as described in Bulletin No.: 17-NA-158 I have a 2017 XT5 Platinum with 80k miles and this is first time this has occurred to me. Conversely, my Cadillac dealership wants to charge me $1300 to fix this? Can yous guys in here help me impress upon the dealership that they need to do this complimentary. My vehicle is paid off and out of warranty unfortunately. Also, the entire time I owned this car from 2017 to now has been serviced at my local Cadillac dealership. Thank you in Advance :)

This is a common problem with the GM 3.6 V6 at 50-60k. The dealer will replace if still under powertrain warranty; if not expect $1,200 -$1,500 bill. Dealers have a high overhead and charge a lot of money for repairs. Most professional garages (I'm not talking about the corner gas station) can fix for little more than half the cost. But it is a pain in the rear to replace, about 3-5 hours work depending on how familiar the mechanic is with the repair. I'd talk to your independent shop and politely ask them if they have experience with GM 3.6 V6 with the P0128 code. My mechanic just rolled his eyes and said "You've got to be kidding me. At least one a month."

I have had the same issues for 12 months on my 2017 xt5 as did my coworker. Been to the dealership 4 times. Both when it is doing it and when it’s not. It threw codes for the thermostat but that doesn’t explain the parking brake light flashing. The dealership has told me it’s just what they do as they get up in age. GMC Acadia is known to do the same thing they said. I found that unacceptable so I called GM corporate and opened a case. Morris Cadillac now refuses to work with me as they feel it would be a negative experience. Aka they don’t know what’s wrong. If something was truly wrong why would it correct itself? So I put a new battery in it. Didn’t help. Note to self don’t buy another one I guess

I just bought my car (2020) and saw this on the info screen also. It will be a couple days before I get to the dealership to get rectified. Is it safe to still drive with this problem? I hit the button so the warning goes away but im sure it's the thermostat. Also do they always stick in the open position?

You should be OK for a couple of days. The thermostat seems to open prematurely because in my experience I have not seen a difference with changes in outdoor temperatures. The range of temperatures achieved seem to be nearly the same in cold or hot weather and the warmup time to reach the lower normalized range is not dramatically lengthened in cold weather.
