11.5kW vs 19.2kW home charging - getting contradictory information

We are awaiting delivery of a 2024 Lyriq and need to install a home charger. I know that Cadillac offers both 11.5kW and 19.2kW chargers, but it's not clear to me if higher-speed (higher wattage) charging will work on our car (a "Luxury 1" model). Is charging speed just determined by the charger, or does the car itself need to be equipped to handle the higher wattage? If so, is that a factory-installed option, or a software upgrade?

Thanks in advance for your help. This is our first EV and we have a lot to learn!

@mhg16 you'll find several discussions on here already (just search for 19.2kW) but the bottom line is it makes marginal difference in most charging situations. Most homes do not support the level of service needed for 19.2 and most public charging also doesn't support it. Ultimately though it's your choice.

They have a Lux 1 on order, I do not believe it has the option for the 19.2 kW onboard charger.

The external EVSE is just a smart extension cord and tells the car what Amperage it's capable of so the car can determine itself how fast to charge. If you have the 11.5 kW charger in the car (lux 1) it will just charge at a max of that no matter if the EVSE can do more and if you had a car with a 19.2 kW on board charger and the EVSE could only do 11.5 kW then it would only pull that to the car.

Thanks for the advice. I should have guessed that this question would have come up before :) I searched the forum and learned that the 19.2kW module is a ~$1500 option (which our car doesn't have) -- on top of the extra cost for the 19kW charger itself -- and I suspect that Dadhawk is right that our house probably couldn't handle it anyway. I expect that most of the time we'll be able to charge it overnight and on a road trip we'll be looking for DC fast charging anyway.

Literally this question was posted just days ago. Forum search is your friend. Talked about many times, and just most recently here...
