I am looking at a used '06 3.6 AWD. It misfires and throws codes 0301 & 0303. Owner claims no diagnosis besides pulling codes. I immediately suspect spark plugs, or coil packs. Suggestions on quick (driveway) tests for anything worse.

Cold start, does it rattle? If it's warmed up before you get there be cautious.

Personally, it's the 3.6, I'd steer clear regardless. That engine doesn't have the best reputation.

And a rattle tells me what? I was initially attracted by the price, but that tells me something too. Also disturbed owner says no diagnostics past pulling codes.

A rattle tells you the timing chain is on the way out. That's the big issue with the 3.6. They have a tendency to use oil, the tensioners are oil pressure driven, and well, you get the point. The 1st gen 3.6 is the worst one.

Go for the 4.6, if possible. Personally, I wouldn't even touch the 3.6 except to push it in a canyon.
