05 STS v8 power steering issue

757 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  framedforlife
My Dad's car has about 212k kms on it, pump went bad. Replaced it, that pump died and the pulley broke trying to take it off. Put in a new pump (cardone, rebuilt) and brand new gm pulley. Car works good most of the time but mid turn occasionally the power steering gives out then grabs back a second later which could be quite dangerous.

Brand new belts were put on when the pump was switched the second time (both belts)

Any idea why it might be doing this? Maybe it needs a new tensioner on the belt? (is there one?)

Thanks a bunch!

Put on a new, not rebuilt, pump. I had the same problem, the rebuilt pump didn't last a year. The folks at the local GM dealer said they quit putting rebuilt PS pumps on anything because so many of them failed. The last straw, they said, was when they went through 3 rebuilds to get a good one before the vehicle even left the garage. I put a new one on and haven't had a problem since.
I got mine from Rock Auto. Much better price than from a dealer.
