Does anyone have a good idea how long these motors can last with proper maintenance?

Is there a cap, when the engine loses power overall (gets tired)

Is there REQUIRED maintenance after 160,000-200,000 miles? After 200k?

I am not talking about normal items, such as suspension or power steering pumps, etc. Just the real heart of the motor and any high mileage examples you can share?

Thank you

These motors have been disassembled with 150K+ miles and still have visible honing marks on the cylinder walls. No common major internal issues. They're very long lasting engines.

There are members here with 200K+, 300K+, and one with over 600K with no major issues.

Re: 03 Deville DTS- Expected Mileage / High Mileage stories

So are you saying it is reasonable that beyond 160k is not possible with general and significant repair?

that sentence makes absolutely NO SENSE -

what MoistCabbage IS saying -

generally speaking - 160,000+ miles is no problem -
with "normal" maintenance -

Corvorado, I think you saw the word "diasassembled" above, and let that skew your understanding of what 'Cabbage' was saying.
The opinion 'Cabbage' was providing is quite the OPPOSITE of what you replied.

My 2001 Deville DTS has 212,309 miles. No major problems at all. Routine maintenance, yes, of course.

basscat: I think MoistCabbage edited it to clarify after my response. Unless my computer was off last night, it only said they have been disassembled at 159k plus the first time I looked at it. .

The clarification answered my first question and you are correct, would have had to need for the follow up from me.

Wow, you must have looked at my reply within a few seconds of me posting it. I accidentally hit post when I first started typing it, and that is all that it read. I immediately edited the post to read just "Editing" as I was typing the rest of it out as intended. It was fixed within 2 minutes or so.

----------

And to clarify, the disassembled engines I was referring to, had the heads off for HG bolt hole thread repair and HG replacement. Which, if you haven't read about already, is an issue with some of these motors that is very much blown out of proportion.

Re: 03 Deville DTS- Expected Mileage / High Mileage stories

Yes. It happens at 112 MPH when the fuel cuts off. :)
Not to hijack this discussion, but is that cutoff documented somewhere?
My experience is that it happens at 120 MPH. I've done this more than once, and 120 is where mine won't give me any more juice.
Perhaps the specific engine makes a difference. 2001 DeVille DTS here.
Oh well.. I'm not worried about it. 112, 120... who's counting?

Vin Y cars are speed limited to 112 mph - as indicated by the tire service rating on the driver's door sticker.

VIN 9 cars are usually speed limited to 130 (H rating) or the tire service rating on the door sticker.

Here's the service ratings table - your FWD Northstar is speed limited to the original tire service rating. (and, yes, there are speed unlimited STS around (Z cars), as well as speed unlimited EXPORT SLS.)

Note that there is no "120 mph" service rating.

I do not think that the cars are speed limited to the tire ratings.
The STS's with Z rated tires where unlimited (I believe).
I though all others where limited to 112.
Can't recall ever hearing of any limited to 118, 124 or 130. I can not imagine GM making that many variations.

All STS delivered with H tires are speed limited to 130.

STS delivered with Z/W tires are essentially "unlimited" but up in the 150s power, torque loss and drag take over, so that's IT.

I think there were some T-cars.

Here's a Canadian STS - Z-car. Plenty of this in Google. 247 kph = 154 mph. (Looks like he did it in traffic. Jackass)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7J4R8qNBT6E

A couple of H-rated STS in there, as well as a few S-rated Y-cars. My STS was H-rated on both the door sticker and by fuel cutoff on the runway.

The DIC shows 4200 RPM
At cruise, not at the 2 shift points.

Oops! I missed the max RPM at fuel cutoff and only saw it after it drifted down. :bang2:

there were 3 - speed rated tires supplied OEM -
S - 112 -
H - 130 -
Z - 149+

those cars that came with "S" tires -
also had a speed-limiter set to 112 -

cars that came with "H" tires got the 130 speed limiter -

cars that came with "Z" tires have unlimited speed setting -

-----------------
odd-balls -

in 2002 there were 32 Deville DHS models with "Z" tires - QNI RPO code -
the other 12,009 came with "S" tires - QPX RPO code -

in 2003 there were 3 SLS models that came with "Z" tires - QQX code
and FE3 /passive suspension -
