was told today that I have a small leak around the head gasket($4800) to fix.... WAAY out of my price range. Looking for basic suggestions on what to do..

I have a child battling Cancer and we need to drive 80miles round trip everyday for treatment. I dont want to put 4800 in a repair that may have other issues down the road. I owe nothing right now... Thanks for suggestions.

Who told you it was a HG and how was it diagnosed? What are your symptoms? There are places that will do that repair for half that price, depending on where you are. Whatever you do, DO NOT pour any snake oil miracle repairs in a bottle in the cooling system. They will not work, regardless of the manufacturers claims.

P.S.
I edited your thread title to make it more descriptive.

Brian - I see you posted twice before about this problem:

Seems like the symptoms you talked about could well be HG's. The best test is the exhaust gas in coolant surge tank test. Video here shows how to do it to be sure:

Good luck. Sorry to hear about your child. Thank you for your service in our Navy.
